It's clear that something error /dev/sdb no medium found horrible has happened to the partition table, and that it's totally corrupt and broken, but surely this should be fixable? I'm not particularly worried about my data - it's surely gone by now, and there's nothing on there that I particularly need. I just need to reformat the thing at this point and get it working again. Oh, and here's the /dev/sda no medium found output of fdisk -l david@david-netbook:~$ sudo fdisk -l Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0xc12b5115 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 1 784 6297448+ 12 Compaq diagnostics /dev/sda2 * 785 10059 74495096 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda3 10059 19177 73242187+ 83 Linux /dev/sda4 19178 19457 2249100 5 Extended /dev/sda5 19178 19457 2249068+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris Disk /dev/sdb: 4009 MB, 4009754624 bytes 124 heads, 62 sectors/track, 1018 cylinders Units = cylinders of 7688 * 512 = 3936256 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0x74a3e94c Disk /dev/sdb doesn't contain a valid partition table Running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, 32-bit. used throughout the whole problem. The problem started when I wanted to install Fedora 15 DVD by making a bootable USB key. The size of the USB stick is 8 GB. http://forums.fedoraforum.org/archive/index.php/t-267461.html The problem happened when I (following the tutorial) wrote the line http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_create_and_use_Live_USB livecd-iso-to-disk command associated with the path to the ISO DVD and the partition on the USB stick. the USB stick has http://superuser.com/questions/32825/partition-table-corrupted-usb-flash-drive the device name /dev/sdb , 1 partition sdb1. I then noticed that it was mentioned to unmount the USB drive before doing this command. so, while the terminal had written in it "Checking" , no medium I pressed CTRL+C to stop the execution and then pressed on the arrow beside the device in the computer window (Which I think that it unmounts the device). The actual problem started here. I then tried to mount the device but couldn't, It said the device was not found. so I removed the drive and inserted it again, the OS didn't automount the USB drive, I tried no medium found to manually mount it but it said the device is not found or doesn't exist. then I used fdisk -l, It said that the sdb didn't have a valid partition table. Also the size of the device is wrongly reported. It should be 8 GB but it is reported to be 2 TB?! fdisk -lu Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14593 cylinders, total 234441648 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0x56744953 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 2048 62916607 31457280 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda2 62916608 125831167 31457280 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda3 125831168 126855167 512000 83 Linux /dev/sda4 126855168 234440703 53792768 5 Extended /dev/sda5 126857216 234440703 53791744 8e Linux LVM Disk /dev/sdb: 2199.0 GB, 2199023255552 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 267349 cylinders, total 4294967296 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0x00000000 Disk /dev/sdb doesn't contain a valid partition table Disk /dev/dm-0: 16.1 GB, 16106127360 bytes 255 heads, 63
