the ability to ssh into the device from outside my local network. For whatever reason, this is proving to be impossible and I haven't the slightest clue why. When I try to ssh into my server with user@hostname, I get the error: ssh: Could not resolve hostname [hostname]: nodename nor servname provided, or not known However, I can log into the server with, ssh user@[local IP] The server is a Raspberry Pi Model B running the latest distribution of Raspbian and the machine nodename nor servname provided or not known mac I am trying to connect to it with is a Macbook Pro running Mavericks. ssh was enabled on the Raspberry Pi when I set up Raspbian. I have perused Stack Overflow for hours trying to see if anyone else had this problem and I have not found anything. Every ssh tutorial I find says that I should just be able to set it up on the remote machine and log in from anywhere using a hostname, and I have never had success with that. linux networking ssh dns share|improve this question edited Apr 8 at 22:57 halfer 13k54075 asked Nov 27 '13 at 20:16 qaxf6auux 4582617 The original error is pointing to the specific issue - whatever [hostname] you're using cannot be resolved from where you're trying it from. Does nslookup [hostname] give you back the [local IP] you're expecting? –admdrew Nov 27 '13 at 20:20 2 nslookup [hostname] spits out; Server: 8.8.8.8 Address: 8.8.8.8#53 ** server can't find [hostname]: NXDOMAIN when run from my Macbook –qaxf6auux Nov 27 '13 at 20:27 2 Just to be sure - you're putting in an actual hostname in [hostname], right? –admdrew Nov 27 '13 at 20:29 That output shows you're using Google's public DNS server(s), which doesn't have any knowledge of whatever hostname you're trying to use. How exactly are you setting up DNS records for your hostname? –admdrew Nov 27 '13 at 20:31 1 Server: 192.168.0.1 Address: 192.168.0.1#53 ** serve

After setting it, I tried to connect by the form of username@ip_address, then it was successful and I was able to be in Ubuntu from OS X Terminal (this time I used port 22). However, when I tried to SSH to Ubuntu by the form of username@hostname, then http://askubuntu.com/questions/317079/cant-sshing-to-ubuntu-via-hostname-and-port-other-than-22 I couldn't and the error ssh: Could not resolve hostname my_user_name: nodename nor servname provided, or not known occurred. I also tried to connect via port 2222 by changing /etc/ssh/sshd_config, then it failed too by spitting out the error debug1: connect to address my_ip_address port 22: Connection refused (this time I tried to connect by IP address). So I think the latter issue stems from the fact that I have to make some sort of modifications also on OS X, but don't know where/how to do and don't know it's true in the first place. The former issue is more annoying, as I'm not sure whether I could understand it correctly. I used hostname as the value that I got from running hostname on Ubuntu Terminal...but is it right? And when I searched for the issue on the Web, I knew that it's from DNS issue...but don't know what it is and how to fix it... Thanks. server ssh openssh share|improve this question asked Jul 6 '13 at 13:50 Blaszard 1531410 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 4 down vote accepted In Terminal on OS X when using ssh to establish a remote connection using a hostname on a local network, add the suffix .local such that the command reads ssh username@hostname.local If you need to override the default port 22, as your example

command: mvn release:prepare -Dusername=dkayiwa -Dpassword=password -B -DreleaseVersion=1.11.4 -Dtag=1.11.4 -DdevelopmentVersion=1.11.5-SNAPSHOT But i keep getting the error message below: [ERROR] Failed to execute goal nodename nor org.apache.maven.plugins:maven-release-plugin:2.4.1:prepare (default-cli) on project openmrs: Unable to tag SCM[ERROR] Provider message:[ERROR] The git-push command failed.[ERROR] Command output:[ERROR] ssh: Could not resolve hostname dkayiwa: nodename nor servname provided, or not nodename nor servname known[ERROR] fatal: Could not read from remote repository.[ERROR] [ERROR] Please make sure you have the correct access rights[ERROR] and the repository exists.
