response code and an optional, mandatory, or disallowed (based upon the status code) message. In the code 404, the first digit indicates a client error, such as a mistyped Uniform Resource Locator (URL). The following two digits indicate the specific error encountered. HTTP's use of three-digit codes is similar to the use of such codes in earlier protocols such as FTP and NNTP. At the HTTP level, a 404 response code is followed by a human-readable "reason phrase". The HTTP specification suggests the phrase "Not Found"[1] and many web servers by default issue an HTML page that includes both the 404 code and the "Not Found" phrase. A 404 error is often returned when pages have been moved or deleted. In the first case, it is better to employ URL mapping or URL redirection by returning a 301 Moved Permanently response, which can be configured in most server configuration files, or through URL rewriting; in the second case, a 410 Gone should be returned. Because these two options require special server configuration, most websites do not make use of them. 404 errors should not be confused with DNS errors, which appear when the given URL refers to a server name

status code. This "Not Found" response code indicates that although the client could communicate to the server, the server could not find what was requested or it was configured not to fulfill the request. The 404 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_404 "Not Found" error is not the same as the "Server Not Found" error which you see whenever a connection to the destination server could not be established at all. The default 404 error page as shown on Internet Explorer is given below. HTTP Status Code Whenever you visit a web page, your computer will request data from a server through HTTP. Even before the requested page is displayed in your browser, the web http://www.404errorpages.com/ server will send the HTTP header that has the status code. The status code provides information about the status of the request. A normal web page gets the status code as 200. But we do not see this as the server proceeds to send the contents of the page. It’s only when there is an error, we see the status code 404 Not Found. Origin of Status Codes As a part of the HTTP 0.9 specifications, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) established HTTP status codes in 1992. Tim Berners-Lee, who invented the web and the first web browser in 1990, defined the status codes. List of Status Codes A brief overview of HTTP status codes is given below. Code Meaning Description 100 Continue Confirms the client about the arrival of the first part of the request and informs to continue with the rest of the request or ignore if the request has been fulfilled 101 Switching Protocols Informs the client about the server switching the protocols to that specified in the Upgrade message header field during the current connection. 200 OK Standard response for successful requests 201 Created Request fulfilled and new resource created 202 Accepted Request accepted, but not yet processed 203 Non-Authoritative Information Returned meta information was not the definitive set from the origin se

However, http://www.trafficgenerationcafe.com/404-not-found-errors/ that does not mean you are less traumatized when you find the sneaky buggers on your Google Webmaster Tools crawl errors page. Let's take a look at what 404 not found errors are, what http://forums.iis.net/t/1164946.aspx?http+localhost+CertSrv+file+not+found+error+ they are not, and how serious of a problem they pose to your site. What Is a 404 Error? A 404 Not Found Error is what your readers see when they try to not found reach a non-existent page on your site. 404 errors happen when someone clicks on a broken link or type a URL incorrectly. How Do You Know You Have 404 Errors? Google Webmaster Tools will tell you if you have any 404 Not Found errors in your Site Dashboard under Crawl => Crawl Errors: As you can see, I have over 400 not found errors on my site and 04 not found my heart is not jumping out of my chest. Why? Do 404 Errors Affect Search Engine Rankings? 404 errors are a normal part of the web. They are expected. They are preferred over other errors. They are dealt with. As I mentioned above, Google blogs have them too. And they DO NOT affect on how your other content-filled pages perform in the search engine rankings. From Do 404s Hurt My Site at Google Webmasters Central blog: Q: Do the 404 errors reported in Webmaster Tools affect my site’s ranking? A: 404s are a perfectly normal part of the web; the Internet is always changing, new content is born, old content dies, and when it dies it (ideally) returns a 404 HTTP response code. Search engines are aware of this; we have 404 errors on our own sites, as you can see above, and we find them all over the web. In fact, we actually prefer that, when you get rid of a page on your site, you make sure that it returns a proper 404 or 410 response code (rather than a “soft 404”). …The fact that some URLs on your site no longer exist / return 404s does not affect how your

Feb 11, 2010 05:44 PM|Laurence5905|LINK Ok... I've been looking at different web-sites for HOURS now, and I just can't find the solution to this problem... On my Windows Server 2003 R2 (SP2) computer, I installed Certificate Services from the Control Panel. I can run the Certificate Services MMC insert -- that works and shows absolutely no certificates have been issued or revoked (as you'd expect from a brand-new CA installation). IIS was installed and running before I installed Certificate Services. From a command prompt, 'certutil -vroot' tells me that all the virtual directories are already installed. When I run the IIS manager, it shows that CertSrv is a valid web page. I look at it, and all the files, including default.asp are all in there. Yet STILL http://localhost/CertSrv gives me a "404 Page Not Found" error. It's just not finding it. WHY??!?!??!?!?!?!! I'm about ready to throw this computer through a damn window! I'd really appreciate some help here. Thanks. Laurence MacNeill, Mableton, Georgia, USA. 404 CertSrv Reply tomkmvp 9756 Posts MVPModerator Re: http://localhost/CertSrv file not found error...
