Chosen solution Click the Disable button on all your installed Extensions - restart Firefox. See if that helps with that 404 issue. Also, who is your Internet Service Provider? Sounds like your ISP may be doing DNS redirects to Yahoo. That ISP may have an Opt-Out feature available to stop sending you to Yahoo Search when there is an error in the URL and let a proper error message from Firefox appear.
