What's the complete, exact error? Did you MD5SUM the ISO to see if it's good? If not, please do so and report the results. (If it's bad, download it again, and MD5 the new one too.) What happens when you try writing Ubuntu to the flash drive using the Universal USB Installer? If that doesn't work, what happens if you try writing it with UNetbootin? Please edit your question to add this information. –Eliah Kagan Feb 17 '13 at 0:31 I had the same problem today and it seems the current version of ubuntu-12.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso is missing the /casper/vmlinuz file. I figured this would be a good time to try something new so I set out a couple days ago to install linux instead. I've tried using LinuxLive, UUI, and IsoToUSB as well as downloading the iso for ubuntu 14.04 desktop 32bit many times and trying each one. To clarify I am using a USB stick with 8gb of total space for the install drive. I've configured the BIOS to use it as the primary boot drive. At this point I'm not sure what's left to try, nor are any of my friends. Last edited by ShirakFaeryn; June 12th, 2014 at 08:29 PM. 14.04 LTS from 13.10. During the update, the installation complained that the grub had been replaced by either me or some script, and prompted whether to keep my changed version or accept the unedited version of Ubuntu 14.04. I remember, this is because of the Boot Repair Tool, which made Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 13.10 to live together in my system, by fixing the boot loader with its grub entries. I decided to keep my version, as I felt otherwise I would lose the option to boot into Windows 8.1, as the default may not include Windows in its grub. Moreover, I just decided to go with the default option provided in the prompt (to go with my version). Upon the upgrade, I restarted the computer. Alas! It was showing the missing item and taking me to a grub> shell. I decided to use Boot Repair Tool once more. It started smoothly, and fixed my system for the second time. Now, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS is my primary operating system, dual booting with Windows 8.1.
