They both error connecting to database: (using class org.gjt.mm.mysql.driver) communications link failure are contained in the driver I found on Maven central that appears to be the standard distribution of the driver. When I look up gjt.org I found some old site that talks about "Mark's mysql driver". http://gjt.org/ mysql jdbc drivers share|improve this question asked Apr 27 '11 at 17:33 Benju 11.3k29117220 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 38 down vote accepted The MySQL JDBC driver was initially developed by a hobbyist. It's later donated to MySQL where they renamed the package/classname. The old classname is kept for backwards compatibility reasons, but if you can, you should update it to com.mysql.jdbc.Driver as soon as possible. share|improve this answer answered Apr 27 '11 at 17:35 BalusC 682k20324712691 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in Sign up using Google Sign up using Facebook Sign up using Email and Password Post as a guest Name Email Post as a guest Name Email discard By posting your answer, yo

I am http://stackoverflow.com/questions/28645898/error-connecting-to-database-using-class-org-gjt-mm-mysql-driver using a Mac running OS 10.10.2. I can connect to the DB using Sequel Pro and have read through all the answers already given on this site (and others!) and have downloaded and copied mysql-connector-java-5.1.34-bin.jar to data-integration/lib and still get the same error. Any suggestions would be welcome. The whole error message is as follows: Error connecting to database [localhost_con] : org.pentaho.di.core.exception.KettleDatabaseException: Error occurred while trying to connect to the database Error connecting to database: (using class org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver) Communications link failure The last packet sent successfully to the server was 0 milliseconds ago. When setting up an ODBC data source via the data sources manager in Windows, I can see all databases and tables on the MySQL Server in Spoon. However, when I try to retrieve information, I get an error (something like "invalid fetch parameters"). I read somewhere in the forum that this might be related to the "weird" ODBC driver, and that it would be better to use the native JDBC instead. I tried, using exactly the same parameters. Unfortunately it does not work, and I get the error message below. (Host name, port and database name are all correct). Could someone please guide me on how to sort this out? I am a newbie to Pentaho, and I hope I placed this thread at the appropriate place. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
