Nov 21, 2008 02:29 PM|anilr|LINK The services that w3svc depends on are WAS and HTTP services - what errors do you get when trying to start either of those services? Also, any events in the eventlog from either of those services? It works perfectly with Local System account (by default the selection with this fresh instance of Windows 2003) - but I have to change the user - not negotiable for me unfortunately as it is a must do instruction from my boss to me. The user Im trying to set it to e.g. UserABC is on the Server and is the service error 1068 Log On for other services which execute without problems. So first I tried setting the Log On for HTTP SSL but received the error: "Error 1079 : the account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process". Now when I looked at the dependencies I saw that WWW publishing service is dependent on HTTP SSL. So I tried setting the Log on for WWW publishing service, but got the error: "Could not start the WWW Publishing service on local computer" "Error 5: Access is denied" Now I tried setting the user for IIS admin, but received the error: "Could not start the IIS admin service on local computer: Error 1068 : The dependency service or group failed to start" Any advice please on how I can change the user log on for these services? The instance of IIS is working fine and its just the password that I need to set. Are there folders which I have to assign rights to for UserABC perhaps? Something else I'm missing? The other forums on the web suggest things like deleting "MetaBase.bin", or running MS fix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827328 but this will not work for me on this new server - but I do not want to muck around with this please. Exchange Issues, World Wide Web Publishing Server failed to StartPosts navigation Solution: Exchange Issues, World Wide Web Publishing Server failed to StartA power failure recently caused a slew of issues with one of our Small Business Server machines and while I got most of them fixed in fairly short order, I couldn't get email clients (Outlook or mobile devices) to connect to Exchange, despite all of Exchange's services running fine.As I know Exchange leans heavily on Internet Information Services (IIS) I checked that service and sure enough, the service was in a stopped state and any attempt to start it resulted in a message saying:Windows could not start the World Wide Web Publishing Service server on Local ComputerError 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.I immediately checked the dependencies and found only one other service, the Windows Process Activation Service:Obviously the next step was to browse to the Windows Process Activation Service service (annoying name huh?) and try and start that. That yielded another error saying:Windows could not start the Windows Process Activation Service service on Local ComputerError 13: The data is invalidThe SolutionsI found three different solutions online and have presented them in order of severity (the third one worked for me):Command Line FixIn a command prompt with elevated privilages, run the following (where C:\ the OS drive:)fsutil resource setautoreset true c:\RebootRecreate AppPools FolderCheck the C:/inetpub/temp folder on your system, if there is no AppPools folder then create one and reboot.Restore ApplicationHost.configRestore the ApplicationHost.config file from the IIS history folders (an automatic backup of previous versions) by doing the following:Locate the most recent history folder in the C:/inetpub/history folder:In the folder, locate the ApplicationHost.Config file and copy it:Browse to the folder c:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\config and paste the retrieve applicationhost.config file there, overwriting the existing one.Try and restart the Windows Process Activation Service (it should work fine now)Try and restart the World Wide Web Publishing serviceNow I'd recommend rebooting the server to ensure any other services that we're reliant on these services fire up correctly.
