I have a problem. I can no longer access my external Hard drive. I was in the process of defragmenting it when my computer locked up. I couldnt http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/63671/ get it to respond so I had to shut down my computer forcefully. After my computer restarted I turned on the external hard drive and tried to access it. When i did an error message popped up that said the drive wasnt formatted. So I used a program I have called testdisk and the MBR was intact and matched the backup so it appears that all that is ok. Next I used a program called EasyRecovery Professional and when i viewed the drive it said "A disk read error occured.... NTLDR is missing... NTLDR is compressed press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". I looked up online for a solution but everything seemd to be oriented toward drives that had an operating system installed. My drive doesnt. It Is just used for storage and to move information between computers. It is a Maxtor 120GB. I have a lot of information on it I would like to be able to save. I really want to be able to find a way to restore the drive just so I dont have to manually recover all the files, reformat the drive and then transfer all 90Gbs back over. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Want to enjoy f

Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.” how to troubleshoot.? up vote 0 down vote favorite I removed my Laptop hard disk and put in a casing thereby making it an external hard disk. Later I formatted the C: partition by connecting the hard disk to a desktop computer via USB port. Once again I mounted the hard disk back into the Laptop. While trying to install Windows XP operating system through CD-ROM drive I encountered the following message: NTLDR is missing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart. I once again tried to install the Operating system but the same message kept appearing. However I am able to access the BIOS on my laptop. I need a solution to fix. Can anyone guide me to fix the problem? windows-xp share|improve this question edited Jun 26 '14 at 2:04 Anderson 1195 asked Jun 25 '14 at 6:32 user3050076 41 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote While formarting only the data gets deleted on that partition, the MBR still exist on the HDD. When you plug it in and try to start your computer now, it first dedects the drive and then finds the old MBR on it. Since the data is deleted, it can not boot into it. You will have to disable HDD booting (reenable it later!) or move it under the CD-Rom in the bios boot priority list, format the disk completly OR force to boot from the CD via the boot menu. share|improve this answer edited Jun 25 '14 at 7:27 answered Jun 25 '14 at 6:42 Kimmax 276115 add a comment| up vote 0 down vote Change the boot order and set CD-ROM drive at the top of boot menu and then install windows
