In 99% of these cases it means that the archive contains incorrect headers. Other ZIP programs can open some archives with incorrect headers, since these programs just ignore errors. If you have such archive, please don't call the 7-Zip developers about it. Instead try to find the program that was used to create the archive and inform the developers of that program that their software is not ZIP-compatible. There are also some ZIP archives that were encoded with methods unsupported by 7-Zip, for example, WAVPack (WinZip)." http://www.7-zip.org/faq.html Also if a .7z archive from a forum, torrent DC+ share etc might be using a derivitive fork of the common compression method that regular stock 7 zip can't recognise. Open File As Archive? “I was in need to compress a large amount of files into a 7-ZIP archive and I did it last week. Everything went well. So I deleted those source files, then plugged the USB after copying http://www.yodot.com/zip-repair/cannot-open-file-7z-as-archive.html 7z achieve to it. Now I am trying to open the archive but I am getting an error message stating that cannot open file 'a.7z' as archive. Any ideas why this is happening? Is there any way http://sourceforge.net/forum/message.php?msg_id=7566954 through which I can recover files that are inside the archive? Those files are very important for me, kindly help me.” You may face certain errors while extracting 7z archive if the archive is corrupted. There open file are few possible cases when 7-ZIP archive is corrupted: Case1: You are able to open 7z achieve and can notice list of files. But when you try to extract, you will get few errors like Data Error, CRC Error. Case2: You can’t open 7-ZIP archive. When you try to open it you may see message “cannot open file 'a.7z' as archive”. In this case due to corruption 7-ZIP can't open some header from open file as start or end of archive. So keep the original 7z archive in-tact and open copied folder in hex editor (do not alter original file) and check Start and End Headers to fix the issue. If Start Header of archive is malfunctioned, then there will be no linkage to End Header. In this case if End Header is fine and size of archive is accurate then you can replace data in Start Header in hex editor with following values and try to open archive. If you are able to open and see list of files then extract it 0000000000: 37 7A BC AF 27 1C 00 04 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 0000000010: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 Both Start and End Header are fine, but total size of archive is incorrect then you can compute correct size of archive from values of Start Header. Make size of achieve correct by adding or removing some data somewhere in archive After trying above techniques you should be able to extract 7ZIP achieve. Still if you are facing same error, 7ZIP unable to open file as archive error then it is time to utilize Yodot ZIP Repair tool as the 7-ZIP achieve is severely damaged and you

But I've also verified the .zip file ... well this file is made under linux ... there are some problems when I create the zip including eventually subfolders. If I create a simply zip with some files, 7z works 100%. So, the second problem is the creation of the .zip file. Running it on Windows XP SP2. I tried unzipping from the command line this way: c:\test\7z.exe x -y c:\files\file.zip and also c:\test\7z.exe x -y c:\files\file.zip -oc:\unzipdir Both these command lines returned me Error: Can not open file as archive. I tried this on a computer that doesn't have 7-Zip installed. What I have is only the 7z.exe file. Do I need to install full 7-Zip to use it through the command line? Anyway, for the process above, I grabbed 7z.exe from another computer with full 7-Zip installed. Any help is appreciated :) Regards, Arsyad If you would like to refer to this comment somewhere else in this project, copy and paste the following link: SeldomGood
