What user is the program running as? Does the bak file exist? Can you access it manually? –Pekka 웃 Oct 18 '10 at 14:41 1 Should we assume this is for SQL Server from the file path, since you didn't put the product in the tags or title? –Powerlord Oct 18 '10 at 14:42 I was able to run this query before I reformatted my laptop if it does any help. This is SQL Server 2008 and I am running as an administrator. The bak file does not exist since I am on the process of creating it with this query. –Smiley Oct 18 '10 at 14:45 @Smiley Face: You have to read the SQL file through your local, not network. So it means you will have to move the SQL file from the network to your local drive first, and restore it. –mrjimoy_05 Apr 8 '13 at 8:13 add a comment| 13 Answers 13 active oldest votes up vote 133 down vote accepted Yeah I just scored this one. Look in Windows Services. Start > Administration > Services Find the Service in the list called: SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) look for the "Log On As" column (need to add it if it doesn't exist in the list). This is the account you need to give permissions to the directory, right click in explorer > properties > Shares (And Security) NOTE: Remember to give permissions to the actual directory AND to the share if yo

The servers are linked via crossover. I am using this setup to practice my log shipping before I http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic366456-357-1.aspx move to the production databases. I am using the wizard to complete the log shipping. The primary server SQLCOM1 is to backup and restore the DB on the secondary server SQLCOM2\SQL_Data using the default folders after the restore. SQLCOM2\SQL_Data has been shared and I have permissions for most of the default SQL groups as well as a user 'connect' and the local admin. When I go to execute the log shipping it throws the following:BackupDiskFile::CreateMedia: Backup device '\\SQLCOM2\SQL_Data\AdventureWorks.bak' failed to create. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.).I am working with SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition SP1. (SP1 to replicate the production servers.)Additional info:I am logged in as Administrator on both machines. The Share Permissions has the following groups or user names:Administrator(SQLCOM2\Administrator)connect(SQLCOM2\connect)EveryoneNETWORKNETWORK SERVICERemote Desktop Users(SQLCOM2\Remote Desktop User)SERVICESQLServer2005MSFTEUser$SQLCOM2$MSSQLSERVERSQLServer2005MSSQLUser$SQLCOM2$MSSQLSERVERSQLServer2005AgentUser$SQLCOM2$MSSQLSERVERSYSTEMEach of these users\groups has full control permissions. Thanks for any help,Ryan Post #366456 Ryan WellmanRyan Wellman Posted Wednesday, May 16, 2007 11:24 AM Forum Newbie Group: General Forum
SERVER - FIX - ERROR : Msg 3201, Level 16 Cannot open backup device . Operating system error 5(Access is denied.) April 13, 2011Pinal DaveSQL38 commentsRecently I formatted my computer and installed fresh SQL Server in it. I installed the AdventureWorks database in my database. Once done, I http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2011/04/13/sql-server-fix-error-msg-3201-level-16-cannot-open-backup-device-operating-system-error-5access-is-denied/ wanted to run few test scripts on my database. Just like every DBA, I decided to take backup of my database - this way I can restore it back to attain an original database state. As https://community.shavlik.com/docs/DOC-23737 soon as I ran the backup command I ended up with the following error. This error is due to a permissions issue on the local disk and user account which is running SQL Server. In this operating system blog post we will talk about the operating system error. Msg 3201, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot open backup device ‘C:\AdventureWorks.bak'. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.). Fix/Resolution/Workaround: I checked which user accounts my SQL Server services are running.I gave full permission to that account to get rid of the error.NOTE: This whole experience was done on the my personal machine and not on the production server. Please check with your network error 5 access administrator for permission on production server.Let me know if you have ever faced such error and if you have, how did you fix the error. Please leave a comment with your answer. I hope you find this blog post helpful.Reference: Pinal Dave (http://blog.SQLAuthority.com) Tags: SQL Backup and Restore, SQL Data Storage, SQL Error Messages, SQL Server33Related Articles SQL SERVER - FIX: sp_rename error Msg 15225 - No item by the name of ‘%s' could be found in the current database January 5, 2016Pinal Dave SQL SERVER - 2005 - Best Practices for SQL Server Health Check November 17, 2007Pinal Dave SQL SERVER - Optimizing Three Important Resources - CPU, Memory and Disk April 29, 2014Pinal Dave 38 comments. Leave new Eugene April 13, 2011 12:24 pmSimple but useful topic =) ThxReply Jonathan Kehayias April 13, 2011 12:41 pmHey Pinal,The secure way to solve this problem is to place the backup file in the BACKUP directory for SQL Server which will have the necessary permissions granted on it for the service account already. Access to the root of any storage device in Windows is secured by default in Windows Server 2008 and 2008R2 and I wouldn't recommend adding to the ACL list there, I generally remove permissions from the root to further lock down the system.Reply pinaldav
