Precompilations Separate Precompilations Compiling and Linking This chapter details the requirements for running the Oracle Precompilers. You learn what occurs during precompilation, how to issue the precompiler command, how to specify the many useful precompiler options, and how to do conditional and separate precompilations. The Precompiler Command To run an Oracle Precompiler, you issue one of the language-specific commands shown in Table 6-1. Table 6-1 Precompiler Command Host Language Precompiler Command COBOL procob FORTRAN profor The location of the precompiler differs from system to system. Typically, your system manager or DBA defines environment variables, logicals, or aliases or uses other operating system-specific means to make the precompiler executable accessible. The INAME option specifies the source file to be precompiled. For example, the Pro*COBOL command procob INAME=test precompiles the file test.pco in the current directory, since the precompiler assumes that the filename extension is .pco. You need not use a file extension when specifying INAME unless the extension is nonstandard. Input and output filenames need not be accompanied by their respective option names, INAME and ONAME. When the option names are not specified, the precompiler assumes that the first filename specified on the command line is the input filename and that the second filename is the output filename. Thus, the Pro*FORTRAN command profor MODE=ANSI myfile.pfo DBMS=V7 myfile.f is equivalent to profor MODE=ANSI INAME=myfile.pfo DBMS=V7 ONAME=myfile.f Note: Option names and option values that do not name specific operating system objects, such as filenames, are not case-sensitive. In the examples in this guide, option names are written in upper case, and option values are usually in lower case. Filenames, including the name of the precompiler executable itself, always follow the case conventions used by the operating system on which it is executed. What Occurs during Precompilation? During precompilation, an Oracle Precompiler generates

With the release of Oracle8.0.3, users are cautioned that the Version 6 compatibility flag is being desupported effective immediately in all of the Oracle8 products including PL/SQL8, all the Oracle Precompilers, the Oracle8 https://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/appdev.102/b14354/chapter6.htm Oracle Call Interface, SQL*Module, and SQL*PLUS. The desupport of the V6 compatibility flag is consistent with Oracle's policy of supporting backwards compatibility and behavior from one version release upgrade to another i.e. from Oracle6 to Oracle7 but not for more than one version release upgrade. Specifically, the V6 Compatibility flag emulated the following aspects of Oracle6 behavior with Oracle7: o String literals are fixed length in https://www.bnl.gov/phobos/Detectors/Computing/Orant/doc/relnote.805/w27.htm Oracle7 but are treated as variable length with the V6 flag o PL/SQL Local char variables are fixed length in Oracle7 but are treated as variable length with the V6 flag. o Return value of SQL Functions (e.g. USER) are fixed length characters in Oracle7 but are treated as variable length characters with the V6 flag. o Select/Fetch of a NULL with no indicator raises an ORA-1405 error with Oracle7 but returns no error with the V6 flag. o SQL group function is called at FETCH time with Oracle7 but is called at query execution time with the V6 flag. o Describe of a fixed length string returns Type=96 with Oracle7 but returns Type=1 with the V6 flag. All of these behaviors are being desupported with the desupport of the V6 Compatibility Flag with Oracle8. o New Features for Version 1.8.6 None. o New Features for Version 1.8.25 ------------------------------- Support for NCHAR data in Pro*COBOL NCHAR data is now fully supported by the kernel. Previous releases of the precompiler supported this datatype with the NLS_LOCAL option. For new applications, users are strongly encouraged to rely on the database support and accordingly set NLS_LOCAL=NO during precompilation. * Note:
