A lot of these error messages are obscure to begin with and probably only have meaning for the original programmers. Some of them are legacy codes that won't necessarily have any meaning for current operating systems. Some Samba Shares have problems if copying 2GB or more macintosh os x download - especially if single files exceed 2GB. Try and copy in smaller chunks.Tony Helpful (0) Reply options Link to this post by nchollet, nchollet Nov 1, 2009 8:09 AM in response to Antonio Rocco Level 1 (0 points) Nov 1, 2009 8:09 AM in response to Antonio Rocco Hello Tony, thanks for the links. I'm trying to copy a 50 GB directory, with a lot of files in it exceeding 2 GB, so obviously, SMB may not be the appropriate route to go. I will try FTP.Cheers,NicolasMessage was edited by: ncholletMessage was edited by: nchollet Helpful (0) Reply options Link to this post This site contains user submitted content, comments and opinions and is for informational purposes only. VPN Client Comments By Rob Griffiths, Macworld Oct 17, 2008 12:57 PM One of the most-used programs on my Mac is the Cisco VPN Client, which is what I use to connect https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2218247?start=0&tstart=0 to Macworld’s VPN when posting articles such as this one. (OS X’s built-in VPN client also works, but it also logs me out of and then back into iChat every time I connect or disconnect from the VPN. The Cisco VPN Client doesn’t have this annoying problem, so I use it instead.) While the Cisco VPN Client works well most of the time, sometimes when http://www.macworld.com/article/1136208/ciscovpn.html I try to launch the application, I’m greeted with this error message in place of the usual connection dialog: Error 51: Unable to communicate with the VPN subsystem. Please make sure that you have at least one network interface that is currently active and has an IP address and start this application again. The error is clearly incorrect, because my machine’s networking capabilities are otherwise fine—I can browse the net, send and receive e-mail, and connect to other machines in the house. I don’t get the error message all the time, and I don’t really know what causes it. It does seem to happen more often if I’ve slept and woke the machine, or moved it from one defined location to another, but even then, it’s not predictable. All I know for sure is that it’s annoying, because (until recently) the only fix I was aware of was to reboot the machine. One day, after probably the second or third time I’d restarted my machine, I decided there must be a better solution, so I went digging to see if anyone else had already found one—and they had. It appears that I cannot write to the disk anymore. I'm thinking it may be a permissions issue, but I'm not sure how to change that. Also, I cannot get on the internet now. I can't do anything right now, any help much appreciated. This is all I could find, I don't know what it means though: -51 macintosh os x rfNumErr Reference number invalid #1 ShadowTech, May 30, 2004 Cheryl uix_expand uix_collapse Rosie Moderator Staff Member Mod Joined: Dec 26, 2001 Messages: 4,191 Likes Received: 36 Use your OS Cd to start up the computer... start up computer - insert CD - hold down the C key. At the first installation screen, go to the installer menu and select Disk Utility. Have it repair your drive. When it comes up that it appears to be okay, run repair permissions. Now go to the menu and select Start Up, select your hard drive, and then restart. #2 Cheryl, May 30, 2004 ShadowTech uix_expand uix_collapse Registered Joined: Sep 27, 2003 Messages: 140 Likes Received: 0 It worked! It came up with these errors: - Invalid sibling link - Volume bit map needs minor repair. I had to run it twice to fix both problems, but it seems ok so far. Thank you for your help. #3 ShadowTech, May 30, 2004 ShadowTech uix_expand uix_collapse Registered Joined: Sep 27, 2003 Messages: 140 Likes Received: 0 Well, it did work for about a day. I have downloaded Disk Warrior, so I can try to fix it with that. My problem is, that I only have 1 Mac (can't write to disk), so I was forced to download the .dmg file on my Windows PC. Does anyone know how I can extract the data from this .dmg file under Windows? #4 ShadowTech, Jun 1, 2004 Cheryl uix_expand u

I've tried transferring the file several times and it always stops after 8.7 Gb with the -51 error message. I've tried running applejack to clean up the disk on the source machine, but no luck with the file transfer. Any ideas on what is going wrong? Other methods to try? Ethernet isn't the best way to do file transfers to begin with especially with such a large file. The best way would be to use an external FW drive if you have one. Wish it had provided a more specific error about the missing file. I used Carbon Copy and it persisted through copying all files, reporting the missing ones at the end.
