response to ruimgp Gah, "it just works" was not quite the case this time but I got it to work! I have an early 2008 Mac Pro with a RAID array and OS X 10.6.6. I downloaded Lion and got the infamously vague error message. I then tried the following in not necessarily this order:1) First I tried zapping the PRAM by holding down command-option-P-R all at once during startup. Nothing happened. Then I remembered tip #1: For some reason, at least on my Mac, the keyboard only works during startup if plugged into the front of my mac, not if it is plugged into my monitor. This time I got two startup chimes like I'm supposed to, showing it was indeed zapped. Anyway, still didn't help.2) Then I tried running disk utility from my installation disk and sure enough there were some problems with the disk which it fixed. Still didn't help Lion get installed.3) I followed the nice instructions on how to burn your own Lion installation disk at: http://mashable.com/2011/07/20/lion-clean-install-guide/#20859Step-1-Download-Li on-Fr

You may be presented with an option to select which disk is the target https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3193401?start=30&tstart=0 for installation. In some situations, the disk you want to upgrade may be labelled "This disk cannot be used to start up your computer." If possible, back up and reformat the target disk before installing. If you aren't able to back up and reformat, try the following steps to resize the partition where you want to install OS X: Restart your Mac from your usual startup disk. Open Disk Utility, located in /Applications/Utilities/ . Select the disk where https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203482 the volume you intend to upgrade resides. This usually starts with a number representing the total size of the disk. Click the Partition tab. Click and drag the resize corner of your intended install partition to make the size slightly smaller. The blue portion represents used data space. The partition only needs to be approximately 128MB smaller than it was before resizing but it needs to be larger than the blue portion. Example Before: After: Click Apply. When the partition resizing is complete, quit Disk Utility and install OSX. After the OS X installation is complete, you can use Disk Utility to resize the partition back to its original size by dragging the resize corner to make the partition as large as it was before. You don’t have to boot from a DVD or flash drive. Just download the Install Mac OS X Lion app from the Mac App Store and let it walk you through the remaining steps. Still, things can—and occasionally do—go astray. One possible hitch right away is that you’ll need to have the Mac App Store application on your drive. This requires that your Mac be running OS X 10.6.6 or later (for more help on this and everything else you need before you can install Lion, read Dan Frakes’ Lion installation guide, particularly Get your Mac ready for Lion). Assuming you pass this hurdle, the next place where things may go wrong is during the installation process itself. In particular, you may get one of several warning messages.
