Checking for new software will show about a dozen updates (Security updates, Safari, iPhoto, printers, etc) and if choose install it downloads them. After downloading and then clicking restart the computer sits at the purplish sky desktop with no progress bar, and then after about 3 minutes it goes back to the login window (without ever installing or restarting). If I then select check for updates the same updates will all be presented and I can repeat the process. Manually downloading and installing an update such as 10.6.8 combo updater works as it should, and then check for updates no longer presents that particular update as an option. This seems to be the result of some setting or 3rd party application as I've got 3 out 7 computers experiencing this exact same problem. What could cause this and how can I fix it? osx updates share|improve this question edited May 30 '12 at 21:39 Jeremy W 3,2311034 asked May 11 '12 at 23:23 ridogi 2,4821021 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote Try doing a Repair Disk and Repair Permissions in Disk Utility, just to be sure. Also, look in the All Messages log stream in the Console utility and then run Software Updates, and see if any of the log messages give you a clue what's going on. Al

I reformatted my disk and installed fresh off my Snow Leopard disk. I then continued to download 1.16GB worth of combined update (10.6.6) and I kept getting an "invalid checksum" error when attempting to open the DMG. I'll be very clear on this to stop going around in circles. I have spent the last 2 days looking at this issue, trawling through forum posts, re-installing, verifying and checking my disk, trying 10.6.1 instead, reformatting again, doing a zero fill, the works. Anything that a forum seems to have suggested has not worked for me whatsoever. Here's an output from my log: Mar 1 19:37:43 Kieran-Seniors-MacBook-Pro installd[182]: PackageKit: Install Failed: PKG: extracting "com.apple.pkg.update.os.10.6.1" Error Domain=PKInstallErrorDomain Code=110 UserInfo=0x10011a1e0 "An error occurred while extracting files from the package “MacOSXUpd10.6.1.pkg”." Wanted to wipe the drive and install 10.6. Booted from the DVD, used disk utility to zero the drive before starting the install. Ran the install, customized to include Rosetta and QT 7. At the end of the install, got a weird message on screen about a failed installation. Wasn't a kernel panic, but I've never seen an error like it. It booted up fine, everything seemed normal, but when I tried to update to 10.6.8 using the combo updater that I had previously downloaded or Software Update, I get an error message in the installer regarding a problem that is preventing the install: "The Installation Failed. An unknown installation error has occurred. The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance." So, I ran Applejack (full set of tasks), did a safe boot and then normal reboot. Tried updating again, no dice. I don't believe I have access to the original system disks that came with the computer...is there a chance that the imac needs a file that is only available on the original system disk, and that a standard retail 10.6 DVD won't work in this case? Other ideas? On this exact same machine, I did this same thing about 6 months ago. I know things can break, but it hasn't been abused in any way or subjected to heavy workloads. There are some security certificates that expired in you previously downloaded copy. Just wondering why I'm seeing the same error when trying that route?
