I've set up afp on my 12.04 headless server, and it's working well, but I can't seem to get a Time Machine backup going. It finds the two backup volumes (one for my wife, and one for me), and it has me log in, but then I get the OSStatus error 2, saying "Time Machine can't access the backup disk..." I've already chowned the /media/raidmount/Casey's Time Machine/ folder, and set permissions from 755 to 775 to 777, and nothing is working. Has anyone else had this issue, and if so, how did you fix it? & Debian Posted on March 3, 2013 by Dae How to quickly set up Time Machine server on Ubuntu Server 12.04/14.04/16.04 and Debian without using extra repositories, unnecessary packages and redundant configuration. Backing up tested on OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, OS X 10.9 Mavericks, OS X 10.10 Yosemite, OS X 10.11 El Capitan. If you have a problem, you might be able to find a solution https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2183095 in the comments section below the article. Update: if you try this in CentOS, replace apt-get with yum where necessary. If you need to install a new drive, follow the guide on Ubuntu Help. 1. That's all you need to install: sudo apt-get install netatalk avahi-daemon 2. Create a new user http://dae.me/blog/1660/concisest-guide-to-setting-up-time-machine-server-on-ubuntu-server-12-04/ for Time Machine, for example, danny: sudo adduser danny 3. Create a folder which will contain the backup. It doesn't have to be located under /home or called "tm". mkdir -R /home/danny/tm/ sudo chown -R danny /home/danny/tm/ 4. Backup the configuration file: sudo mv /etc/netatalk/AppleVolumes.default /etc/netatalk/AppleVolumes.default.old 5. Create a new configuration file and open it for editing: sudo nano /etc/netatalk/AppleVolumes.default Paste the following line which sets default settings for all shares: :DEFAULT: options:upriv, usedots Then add this line to share a folder with danny: /home/danny/tm "Danny's Time Machine" options:tm volsizelimit:300000 allow:danny Do not touch "options:tm"! Obviously "volsizelimit:300000" limits the share to 300000 MiB (~314GB). (Finder will show "314GB available" when connected). Remove it if you want. Important! Make sure you've replaced /home/danny/tm with the actual path you chose in step 3. Otherwise you'll be getting OSStatus 2 errors later on. 6. Restart netatalk: sudo service netatalk restart 7. Connect to your server using Fi

I can not pinpoint the exact time I started getting this error but it may have been around the time of an OS X update. So at some point Time Machine decided to stop osstatus error 2 working and presented with this error:Time Machine can't access the backup disk "Time Machine". The operation couldn't be completed. (OSStatus error 2).I have tried to reboot both the DS and my iMac, reset the Mac file service on the DS with no change. The DS is visible on the iMac for file storage and I can view the contents no problems. Can anyone suggest my next course of action? Update DSM to 5.0?Cheers Top Josephharold I'm New! always wanted to have an Apple Time Capsule for easy backup management of your Macs. One of the drawbacks that comes with a device like that is its price. You could also use any Mac for it, but those are also expensive and most likely don't wanna be hidden in a dusty closet. If you have an old PC somewhere that can run Linux (or BSD or any other UNIX) you already have everything you need to build a cheap, reliable Time Capsule yourself. Let's get started! What you'll need: A PC running Linux (or BSD etc.) as the server A Mac (OS X 10.5 and above) that likes to use the Time Machine backup feature A hard drive or spare disk space on your server that is at least as big as the Mac's hard drive A fast network to make things smooth The latest version of Netatalk (>= v. 2.2.0) This guide will use Ubuntu Linux as an example as I tested it with Ubuntu Linux 11.10 and 12.04 LTS. The only critical part is that your Netatalk version has to be >= 2.2.0 beta 4, else it won't work with Lion. Aside from that pre-requisite you can use any Linux/UNIX/BSD/... distribution you want. On the client side, every version since Mac OS X Leopard (10.5) will work. And yes, that includes Lion, Mountain Lion and the newest Mavericks! [Step 0. Optional, but recommended If you are using Ubuntu 11.10 or earlier, add this ppa repository to easily install and update Netatalk to one of the most current versions: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jstrunk-math/ppa If you tried to set up a Time Machine / Netatalk installation before and didn't succeed, completely remove Netatalk and all of its configuration files before you proceed: sudo apt-get remove --purge netatalk There is also no need for any additional Avahi setup since Netatalk 2.2.x comes with built-in Avahi/Bonjour/Zeroconf capabilities in case y
