If the steps here don’t help you to successfully send the email, then contact your email administrator and refer them to the administrator help section of this topic so they can help you. Solution 1: Make sure the recipient's email address is correct This is the most common issue that causes 5.1.x errors. Check for correct spelling. If you change something, send the email again. Solution 2: Remove the recipient's email address from the auto-complete list Remove the recipient’s email address from the list of suggested names in the auto-complete list, then type it again before trying to send the email. The auto-complete list is a list of suggested names that shows up in your email program when it finds a name that matches what you have typed on the To line. If you need more detail about this, see Remove suggested name or email address from the Auto-Complete List in Outlook Web App. Create a new email message. In the To field, start typing the recipient's name or email address until the recipient appears in the drop-down list. Use the Down Arrow and Up Arrow keys to select the recipient, and then press the Delete key. Type the recipient’s complete address and then send your message. Solution 3: Make sure the recipient doesn't have an email message forwarding rule in place Did you send the original message to exactly the same recipient address that is shown in the NDR? when Sending to a Distribution Group Thursday, April 14, 2011 You may find that after you create a new distribution group in Exchange 2010, you cannot send http://www.expta.com/2011/04/how-to-fix-550-511-user-unknown-error.html SMTP email to it from the Internet or internal relay hosts. When you do, https://www.massmailsoftware.com/smtp/550-5-1-1.php you receive a "550 5.1.1 User unknown" error . If you send email to the distribution group internally using Outlook or OWA, it works just fine. This happens because Exchange 2010 automatically sets the attribute Require that all senders are authenticatedto enabled by default. To clear this setting, view the properties of the distribution outlook error group and double-click Message Delivery Restrictions on the Mail Flow Settings tab: Then clear the checkbox for Require that all senders are authenticated and click OK. At first I thought this might be due to the fact that my client is using Edge Transport servers and that the Block messages sent to recipients that do not exist in the directory setting was enabled. This is shown below outlook error 550 from the Edge server's Recipient Filtering properties: I tested this by running the following cmdlet:Test-EdgeSynchronization -VerifyRecipient zzz.domain.comSure enough, the result shows, NotSynchronized - Recipient doesn't exist in source Active Directory, as shown below: Somewhat surprisingly, this result does not change when Require that all senders are authenticated is disabled. I can't believe I've never run into this until now. Before you ask, there is no way to change the default behavior of Exchange 2010 to create all distribution groups with the authentication setting set to disabled (unchecked). However, there are things that are likely to be true, and we are going to talk about them. You are reading this because you’ve received an automated message with a “550 5.1.1” error code in it. There are couple of things that could have caused this error: The recipient address does not exist: you may possess an outdated email that was valid at one time. There are typos in the recipient’s email address, which means that the address to which you are trying to send the email has never existed. If your MX record was changed, you may have an outdated DNS record and you were trying to resolve your MX record to an IP that no longer hosted it. There is something wrong with the configuration of the receiving server. How you can fix the 550 5.1.1 error Check the email for typos (sometimes they are quite obvious, for example: recipient.email@ggmail.com) and verify it. You can use an online tool that serves this purpose—there are lots of them on the Internet. Your DNS record is stale and cannot be resolved by the recipient server. It needs to be updated. Perform DNS lookup for your domain (DNS Lookup) and push the "Find problems" button. Consult the webmaster if you see any errors in the resulting list. If everything looks okay, or you get the same error when trying to send the email again, even though you are
