Office Standard 2003 SP3 OS: winXP SP3 Anyone can shed some light on this issue? Tuesday, June 22, 2010 11:27 AM Reply | Quote Answers 0 Sign in to vote Hi, I suggest you delete the normal.dot file as you could have a corrupted one that is causing issues with Outlook 2003. To do this follow these steps: Close all instances of Office applications As normal.dot is a hidden system file it may not show when you search for it without unhiding hidden files and folders, to unhide folders and files click My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > click the View Tab and put a check where it says "Show hidden files and folders" and untick "Hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operating system files", then apply or OK. The click Start > Search and search for normal.dot, once found rename if multiple copies of them to normal.old then reboot, you don't need to in really but well work recreating the new normal.dot file this way. MS Word may have been corrupted.Do a search for and rename the normal.dot file. Restart Word and a new normal.dot file will be created.Normal.dot is located in C:\Documents and Settings\"Username"\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates folder. It is a hidden file, so you will have to unhide hidden files. In Explorer go to the Menu and select Tools, Folders Options, View. Check "Show hidden files and folders". Click OK.Repair MS Word. With Word open, go to Help, Detect and Repair. If that dosn't work, go to Add and Remove Programs and highlight Microsoft Office. Click on Remove. "Unable to start Microsoft Outlook" error - causes and symptoms The main symptom of this problem is very obvious and easily recognizable: you click Outlook's icon, an hourglass appears and is hanging for a while, and then you get the "Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook" error. According to Microsoft, the major cause of this issue is a corrupted Navigation Pane settings file - profilename.xml, where "profilename" is the name of your Outlook profile. A good indication that the file is corrupted is when its size is 0 KB. No one knows the exact reason why this happens, but all versions of Microsoft Outlook from 2003 to the newest Outlook 2013 may be affected. Other reasons may be when you run Outlook in the compatibility mode, or if you are using a profile created in an older Outlook version, or if the Outlook data file (.pst or .ost) was deleted or damaged as the result of incorrect uninstallation or reinstallation of Outlook. Anyway, whatever the reason is, the outcome is the same - you cannot open the Outlook window because of this error: "Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened." There may be a few variations of this message depending on which Outlook version you use. Outlook 2010: "Microsoft Outlook has encountered a problem
