The kernel version is 2.6.24-19-generic. Sometimes, suddenly something happens and then every command from bash gives the same error: ~$ autoconf -V -bash: /usr/bin/autoconf: Input/output error ~$ ad -bash: /usr/bin/python: Input/output error The file system becomes read-only and no files can even be 'touch'ed. However, uname -r (and possibly other commands) still keep working. If you press Tab-Tab at the terminal, it hangs and then there is no way other than hard-boot to get stuff to work again. Can anyone suggest something to repair this annoying recurrence. Last edited by manish_jain; September 27th, 2008 at 12:48 AM. The read-only action is an attempt to prevent filesystem damage. Unfortunately if the bad disk/partition contains the root files then the system quickly becomes unstable as nothing can be written. Next time it happens try running 'dmesg' as the last few lines may hold a clue as to why it is happening. Also, running 'mount' will show you which partition is now read-o

NFS: "ls: reading directory .: Input/output error" after input/output error kali linux time Hello,I got the following configuration:NFS-server: Always on, connected via LAN.NFS-clients: 2 computers, connected cannot open directory . input/output error via LAN and WLAN. On standby: auto umount NFS-share via system-sleep-hook with systemd. This works flawlessly some hours or even days. But https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=930991 after some time, the following happens:1. mount nfs-share: no error message2a. trying to access that folder via filemanager, e.g. thunar: folder seems to be empty (it isn't on server!), but the correct freesize of the NFS-share on server is displayed in the statusbar.2b. trying https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=187131 to access that folder via commandline: $ ls ls: reading directory .: Input/output errorThe very same worked just a few hours before, I haven't changed anything meanwhile. Sometimes the computer freezes and then unfreezes 2 minutes later, and other times when I try a basic command like less I get the error bash: /usr/bin/less: Input/output error. But this is intermittent too. Any suggestions? Also if I try sudo reboot and enter my password, I get sudo: unable to open /var/lib/sudo/plato/7: Read-only file system Before input output error I used to be able to do sudo reboot fine. If I tail /var/log/syslog I do see these curious lines: .... ata1: softreset failed (device not ready) .... ata1: hard resettting link .... ata1: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=0) What can I do to fix this? 12.04 share|improve this question edited Aug 29 '12 at 21:38 asked Aug 29 '12 at 21:31 dan 97021831 I suggest you have a look at /var/log/syslog, and I have a hunch you'll see a lot of disk-related errors. Input/output error indicates that the system is having trouble reading or writing information, and this is most likely due to damaged storage devices. –roadmr Aug 29 '12 at 21:36 2 Go to "Disk utility", it will tell you more about the "health" of your hard drive. –Cumulus007 Aug 29 '12 at 21:44 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 3 down vote Backup your data NOW. I would copy/clone the the whole partition (using eg. dd) just to make data safe (don't forget to unmount the partition first). Then you can experiment with one of the copies to recover the files and fix filesystem; try to run fsck, or this might help as well: http://www.cgsecurity.org/ (photorec, testdisk) http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/SuSE/2
