The kernel version is 2.6.24-19-generic. Sometimes, suddenly something happens and then every command from bash gives the same error: ~$ autoconf -V -bash: /usr/bin/autoconf: Input/output error ~$ ad -bash: /usr/bin/python: Input/output error The file system becomes read-only and no files can even be 'touch'ed. However, uname -r (and possibly other commands) still keep working. If you press Tab-Tab at the terminal, it hangs and then there is no way other than hard-boot to get stuff to work again. Can anyone suggest something to repair this annoying recurrence. Last edited by manish_jain; September 27th, 2008 at 12:48 AM. The read-only action is an attempt to prevent filesystem damage. Unf

you initiate any commands in Linux. I have pointed some examples that reports similar input/output error kali linux error. # du -bash: /usr/bin/du: Input/output error #mkdir sampledir mkdir: cannot create directory `sampledir': Input/output error Input/output error while running bashrc input/output error the command mostly due to two reason. Either it could be bad blocks on the disk or someone hacked your machine. In this situation first suggestion would be to check /var/log/messages for any disk https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=930991 related alerts (might see some sense key alerts). tail -n 100 /var/log/messages tail -f /var/log/messages If you notice any disk issues , try any disk utility to confirm this. One option would be use smarttools. You can check smartool option to fix bad blocks. If you already installed it you can take the advantage of that. Next immediate action would be take backup of your system. Good if http://linoxide.com/how-tos/inputoutput-error-bad-blocks-how-to-restart-linux/ you already have it :-). If you have good backup its safe to reboot. If your system was hacked there are chances they might messed up your file and system would not work after reboot. You can also try fsck but it really dont fix most time if it bad block issue. Fsck can fix only if it related to any filesystem related issues. Usually fsck will fail in between as when it try to read the file at bad block. Now if try to reboot , it can also give the same output. You can try init 6. # reboot bash: /sbin/reboot: Input/output error # shutdown -r now bash: /sbin/shutdown: Input/output error If the above reboot commands doesnot work try either forced reboot or shutdown . Forced Reboot echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq echo b > /proc/sysrq-trigger Forced Shutdown echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq echo o > /proc/sysrq-trigger You might also likeHow To Fix / Repair Bad Blocks In LinuxHow To Backup LVM Configuration On Linux (vgcfgbackup & vgcfgrestore)Linux Crontab : How To Configure Cron With Best ExamplesHow To List Linux Pci Devices Using lspci CommandSet Date And Time In Linux And Sync With Hardware (CMOS)Linux Hdparm Command: Display Hard Disk Model and Serial Numbe

The intended meaning is a hardware failure: your hard disk is failing. Often this error turns up in cases where the problem is a software bug or a misuse of a special-purpose filesystem. But here, you're reading from a system directory, so a hardware failure is the most likely explanation. RAM also tends to fail, so when you see an inexplicable error, do test your RAM. share|improve this answer answered Aug 11 '13 at 19:56 Gilles 369k666681119 OK I see...What I maybe forgot to mention is that the Server is a VPS... So I guess a restart might fix it? –DextrousDave Aug 12 '13 at 4:03 @DextrousDave A restart might make the symptom go away, but it can't fix the problem. On a VPS, there's also a chance of a bug in the virtualization layer. Investigate a little more (for example, is this fully deterministic?) and contact your hosting provider's support. –Gilles Aug 12 '13 at 7:35 I contacted my Service Provider and they restarted the server from their end. The problem is now resolved, they also cannot give me a definitive answer, so I will have to monitor the OS closely. Thanks for the
