I'd try dd. I did dd if=/dev/sr0 of=/home/user/file (file being the filename). Every time I tried to do it I got

Here's the mplayer error MPlayer2 UNKNOWN (C) 2000-2012 MPlayer Team mplayer: could not connect to socket mplayer: No such file or directory Failed to open LIRC support. I think if you write this to disk it will play (/home/todd/music/Surfing_With_The_Alien.iso) from your optical drive.What you probably are trying to do is play an iso filesystem, for this to work you have to loop mount the .iso file.mount -o loop /home/todd/music/Surfing_With_The_Alien.iso file_name, & then you should be able to play file_name. If you want to download music from a CD and then burn that music on a blank CD to back it up (is that what I'm hearing you say?), I'd recommend a program like Brasero or k3b, which I'm sure are

I even threw some video DVDs at it to make dvd to iso sure it wasn't the disc. Log in as root, insert a data CD, and try to mount it manually- what happens?
