I'm beginning to suspect that this might be a kernel bug. The following happens on an Intel i7 system, running an up-to-date Ubuntu Karmic, Desktop Edition, 64-bits. My kernel is 2.6.31-16-generic. My DVD-RW drive is: Code: $ sudo lshw -class disk *-cdrom description: DVD-RAM writer product: DVD RW AD-7170A vendor: Optiarc physical id: 0.0.0 bus info: scsi@6:0.0.0 logical name: /dev/cdrom logical name: /dev/cdrw logical name: /dev/dvd logical name: /dev/dvdrw logical name: /dev/scd0 logical name: /dev/sr0 version: 1.O3 serial: [Optiarc DVD RW AD-7170A 1.O3 Jul14,2006 BT-LIG capabilities: removable audio cd-r cd-rw dvd dvd-r dvd-ram configuration: ansiversion=5 status=ready *-medium physical id: 0 logical name: /dev/cdrom First attempt: Code: $ dd if=/dev/sr0 of=image.iso dd: reading `/dev/sr0': Input/output error 0+0 records in 0+0 records out 0 bytes (0 B) copied, 0.127185 s, 0.0 kB/s $ dmesg ... I even threw some video http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=241604 DVDs at it to make sure it wasn't the disc. Code: [pickens@acer1 Videos]$ dd if=/dev/sr0 of=POTC.iso dd: reading `/dev/sr0': Input/output error 5088+0 records in 5088+0 records out 2605056 bytes (2.6 MB) copied, 1.67727 s, 1.6 MB/s [pickens@acer1 Videos]$ I am getting the same thing on my laptop running Mandriva, oddly enough. Two different drives, two different computers, two different distros and multiple DVDs. What could be the problem?? __________________ Desktop machine: Zotac MiniITX MB / Pentium Dual Core E2200 (Soon to be Core 2 Duo), 4GB RAM, 640GB SATA, nVidia integrated GPU. Junkie Registered: 2011-04-02 Posts: 261 Dd won't work from cd/dvd drive? I like to make backup copies of my music CDs so I thought I'd try dd. I did dd if=/dev/sr0 of=/home/user/file (file being the filename). Every time I tried to do it I got an error of dd: reading `/dev/sr0': Input/output error output error 0+0 records in 0+0 records out 0 bytes (0 B) copied, 0.00895559 s, 0.0 kB/sSo I tried dd_rescue from http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Dd_rescue and it seemed to make the .iso but vlc and mplayer don't want to play it so I'm assuming dd_rescue didn't make a proper copy? Here's the mplayer error MPlayer2 UNKNOWN (C) 2000-2012 MPlayer Team mplayer: could dvd to iso not connect to socket mplayer: No such file or directory Failed to open LIRC support. You will not be able to use your remote control. Playing /home/todd/music/Surfing_With_The_Alien.iso. Invalid seek to negative position fffffffffffffff8! Failed to recognize file format. Exiting... (End of file) Before anyone asks, yes the CD does work just fine I've listened to it with no problems, problem's just making a backup. Thank you everyone for being helpful and answering my questions.Machinae Supremacy fan for life \m/_(^_^)_\m/ Offline Be excellent to each other! #2 2012-12-16 18:13:32 fatmac #! I think if you write this to disk it will play (/home/todd/music/Surfing_With_The_Alien.iso) from your optical drive. What you probably are trying to do is play an iso filesystem, for this to work you have to loop mount the .iso file.mount -o loop /home/todd/music/Surfing_With_The_Alien.iso file_name, & then you should be able to play file_name.
