When is the code detected?Malfunction is detected when EVAP control system has a leak, EVAP control system does not operate properly. Possible symptoms- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)- Possible p0440 nissan frontier a noticeable fuel odor caused by the release of fuel vapors P0440 Nissan Description The Engine Control Module (ECM) tests the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system for the following conditions:- Large and small leaks- Excess vacuum- Purge flow during non-commanded conditions- Fuel Level and Fuel Pressure sensor faults- EVAP Purge and Vent Valve faultsThe ECM monitors the Fuel Tank Pressure sensor in order to determine the level of vacuum/pressure in the EVAP system. The ECM commands both the EVAP Purge Solenoid and the EVAP Vent Valve ON when the conditions are met in order to apply an engine vacuum to the EVAP system. The ECM commands the EVAP Purge Solenoid OFF once the system has reached a predetermined level of vacuum. This test verifies if a vacuum can be achieved in the EVAP system. Service Engine Soon light came on the other day. Auto Zone retrieved the Codes P0446 & P0440 which http://www.justanswer.com/nissan/5ybtf-nissan-sentra-fix-obd-p0440-code.html points to the area of the EVAP purge/vent solenoid. Three days before the light came on I changed the oil MYSELF for the first time (girl friend's car). The oil filter is located in a bad place and p0440 nissan I had a heck of a time getting at it. I noticed in the service manual that the EVAP Purge Control Solenoid Valve may be located near the oil filter (haven't crawled under there yet to look). I am wondering if I inadvertently pulled a vacuum hose off or damaged something. It is hard to tell in the service manual picture if the Purge Valve is indeed located near the oil filter. Any thoughts on this p0440 nissan altima or the codes? Thanks. The PCM detected a Voltage short or open onthat circuit and set the code. P0440 could be as simple as your oil change, but I can't see any way that changing the oil can cause an unexpected voltage anomaly in the vent control circuit. There are a LOT of possible causes, and there will be a lot of testing and inspection that must be done to pinpoint the actual faulty part/sensor. If you simply burn out/remove the bulb, the machine will know. If you clear the codes by removing the "NEG" cable from the battery, the machine will know, and fail you for "Not Ready staus of the Monitors". Sorry.
