Since the .bbl file is generated by Biber or BibTeX, you should remove it and run the appropriate program (Biber, if you use the standard setting for biblatex); this operation will generate a new .bbl file according to biblatex wishes. I followed lockstep's guide to http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/264053/how-do-you-make-biblatex-work-in-sharelatex switching to biblatex. Seemed very clear and straightforward. After commenting out the bibtex command I added the necessary pre-amble to my document. My pre-amble currently looks like this: \documentclass[12pt,twoside]{report} \usepackage{appendix} \usepackage{graphicx} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage[byname]{smartref} \usepackage{hyperref} \usepackage{txfonts} \usepackage{tocloft} \usepackage{csquotes} \usepackage[backend=bibtex, citestyle=authoryear]{biblatex} \addbibresource{thesis.bib} After this material I have the document and the bibliography commands: \begin{document} This contains an error that says: "Package biblatex error: File output.bbl not created by biblatex. \printbibliography This contains an error that says empty bibliography on input line 162. \end{document} I've thoroughly researched proposed solutions. I tried to paste code from this ShareLaTeX template but it didn't work for me---in fact my document wouldn't compile at all. What I might do next if I don't hear from anyone is try to rebuild based on the ShareLaTeX template. Ugh I don't have time for this. Help! What I want : I am writing my thesis and I want to have Harvard style citation and bibliography. In my main document, I added \begin{thebibliography}{99} \addcontentsline{toc}{chapter}{Bibliography} \bibitem{Knuth92} D.E. Knuth, \emph{Two notes on notation}, Amer. Math. Monthly \textbf{99} (1992), 403--422. \end{thebibliography} and \cite{Knuth92} I could write the bibitem anyway I want and it comes out as I wrote it. But the citation is [#ID#] and not (Author, Year). Also, it is tedious to write up all the bibliography entries according to the type of the source because I am expecting nearly 75+ sources.
