I purchased a Panasonic DMRES35V in 2006 and it played well until I tried to transfer an old favourite VHS casette over to DVD format this week. Initially I put a CD-RW disk in, which may have caused the problem, and then a DVD-R and then a DVD +R blank disk. I encountered a U88 error and tried to http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/288758-Panasonic-DMR-ES35V-DVD-NoRead-repair sort this out through the manual, what a joke. I then placed a new DVD-R disk into the machine and then accessed the DVD menue [for the last time it appeared] and was asked to 'format' the disk for recording. This failed and the end result was that I can no longer access the DVD drive, to record or play, and the DVD menu does not come up when DVD functions are selected from the hand controller. The only menu accessable is the VHS menu. The VHS drive works fine. I have read a lot about drive failures in this model, DMRES35V, on this and other sites and am surprised that Panasonic continues to produce machines like the current DMREX47V I purchased, unaware of the DVD drive issues, which seems to have the same drive unit? Anyway I came across an article in this forum which indicates that it might be the 'laser' which has failed in the DVD drive unit. Also one forum list on this site considered replacing the DVD drive with a PC DVD+/-RW drive in a similar JVC unit? Can anyone help. I am a retired electronics technician and could disassemble the DVD unit and make repairs/replace it if poss

Noticed unit seemed warmer than usual. Removed cover panasonic dmr ez48v and noticed that disc wasn't spinning up, although the laser head was moving back and forth. I also cleaned the laser lense, but made no difference. I'm not sure but I think this may be related to lead free solder. The main control board in the center has a label "PbF" and a BGA (Ball Grid Array) microprocessor in the middle (under heatsink). The Microsoft Xbox 360 used the same configuration (BGA and lead free solder) that caused the "Red ring of death". I may be wrong, but the pattern of failures 6 to 12+ months seems simular to the xbox. I'm told it's next to impossible to repair, but I'm going to try having the main control board run through a reflow oven to hopefully reflow the cracked solder connections. Has anybody experienced the same error message on their Panasonic DVD recorder? I was transferring some programmes from the HDD to DVD a few nights ago & when it came to finalising the disk it came up with this error message (U88) & said that the disk was corrupt & the system needed to restart & reset itself. The problem is it did reset itself, but nothings changed. Whenever we put a disk in now, it can't read the disks & makes a sort of clunking sound trying to read it (even when a disk isn't in). It thinks there's a disk in, when there isn't & comes up that it cannot read the disk. The error code U61 has come up a couple of times as well. I've only tried resetting it at the moment & not done anything to see whether the lens just needs a clean. The hard drive still works fine though. Any help would be appreciated. 6feetunder_1985 View Public Profile Visit 6feetunder_1985's homepage! It reported an error writing to a +R dual layer disc and since then all I get is the U88 error code, then it resets (successfully it says) but the machine now reports any DVD as unreadable. This includes brand new Panasonic DVD-RAM discs. It also thinks a DVD is in the machine when the tray is empty and closed, making the same clunking sound that you report. I've not had the U61 code, though. Did you manage to get yours fixed? Mine is only 13 months old - typically I had a 12 month warranty.... Last edited by niallmac2002 : 17-06-2008 at 17:12.
