When I hear a new patch for RvS comes out, I think "Oh joy, another reinstall for me." And it's true, another total reinstall of RvS. Whenever there is a new patch, for example, v1.55 to v1.56. I download the patch and run it. It gets all the way done and then gives me the error: --------------------- Patch Error: Failure Renaming File --------------------- This has happend on every patch that is not from v1.0. The only way around it for me is by reinstalling RvS and patching from v1.0 to v1.XX being the latest. And like everyone knows, Ubi releases patches nonstop. Most the time they are just fixing errors the last patch had and again, making more of a mess. Well, any help would be great. Go here after install the game get manual patch for your patch error failure region. Then see how that works.http://www.ea.com/official/cc/generals/us/demos.jspThe offical US site does not link to this thats why you have to go through this link. EA in the US cleans their servers off so you can't find any old stuff. Of course you could just go to trusty Gamespot they have the patch still.http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/commandconquergenerals/index.html FUBAR24Member Since: November 16, 2005Posts: 12185FUBAR24FollowForum Posts: 12185Followed by: 0Reviews: 3 Stacks: 0Forum Karma: 0#3 Posted by FUBAR24 (12185 posts) - 8 years, 1 month ago ok thanks ill try that :) Chris7304Member Since: September 14, 2007Posts: 25Chris7304FollowForum Posts: 25Followed by: 0Reviews: 0 Stacks: 0Forum Karma: 0#4 Posted by Chris7304 (25 posts) - 8 years, 17 days agoDid it work for you? However when I run these commands I get the output. patch: **** Can't rename file ./update.patch.omMg8yG to update.patch : Operation not permitted unix patch share|improve this question edited Oct 14 at 17:47 Charles Duffy 96.1k15103144 asked Oct 14 at 17:42 Antony Capper 112 patch is not part of bash, and can be used without bash installed at all. –Charles Duffy Oct 14 at 17:46 that said, there are a few noteworthy items. Writing into a file in a directory you're incrementally diffing at the same time as the write is ongoing is not, generally speaking, a good idea; patch's behavior is not well-defined if files are being changed inline. –Charles Duffy Oct 14 at 17:48 Is update.patch your value of patchname? Can you create a reproducer that's complete enough that someone else can run it (thus, responsible for creating and setting up contents in folder1 and folder2, setting patchname, etc)? –Charles Duffy Oct 14 at 17:49 Also, if you were running this on a platform that wasn't really a UNIX -- say, Cygwin -- then that other platform's file locking rules could apply such that a file that was being read couldn't be concurrently modified. –Charles Duffy Oct 14 at 17:50 update.patch is the value of patchname. As for you second question I am not to sure what you are asking. –Antony Capper Oct 14 at 17:53 | show 15 more comments 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote The problem is here: cd "${folder1}" diff -ruN "${folder1}" "${folder2}" > "${patchname}" You're inside folder1, and trying to create a patch that's also inside folder1 (which we know because your log file is calling the file ./update.patch.omMg8yG, explicitly referring to the current directory), which contains a set of differences between folder1 and folder2, while those d
