The error can also be caused by an incompatibility pcl xl error illegalattributevalue between the Enhanced XL language and the software application that is associated with the file being printed, Adobe Photoshop Album in your case. The procedure in this HP support document for a different Laserjet model should help determining the source of the problem. In most cases the PCL5e drivers are recommended over PCL6 drivers. They work just as well and won't throw such errors. PCL 6 XL is less forgiving of slight glitches in the printer driver or software. PCL5e has been around longer and is considered more stable. share|improve this answer edited May 16 '09 at 11:16 answered May 15 '09 at 20:28 splattne 23.8k1685138 Thanks for the explanation. Upgraded to the latest version of the drivers and the problem seems to be resolved... for now anyways. :) –Matt Hanson May 16 '09 at 0:37 add a comment| up vote 1 down vote If you are using the PCL6 driver, try the PCL5 driver or PS driver. share|improve this answer answered May 15 '09 at 20:09 Joseph 3,3271932 add a comment| up vote 1 down vote Sounds like a problem with the driver -- see these links. If you have an option to use a postscript driver rather than PCL you might get better results, seems true for a lot of Adobe products. share|improve this answer answered May 15 '09 at 20:12 nedm 4,68242244 I second the PS vs. PCL comment. No problems with jpegs. The only system change since the last time I successfully printed was the recent set of patches which included the change to kernel 2.6.27-14. I'm still using Intrepid, 8.10. I tried reloading the PPD file in system-config-printer, but that didn't help. The only bug I can find in a web search seems to generate gimp errors with anything but postscript images. A user who is running Windows 7 32 bit edition is sending files to print (using the secure print function) - the system is reporting they have spooled fine to the printer - but when they go and pcl xl error release the document they are getting (more often than not) about 16 out of 21 pages (for example) and then a PCL XL Error (Subsystem: Text, InternalError 0x50, Operator: Text, Position: 8564). I have another document that 9 times out of ten will actually crash the WorkCentre completely and cause it to reboot mid way through printing. The driver we are using is the latest: "Xerox WorkCentre 7655 rev 2.0 PCL6"As mentioned the user is running Windows 7 - the printer is shared from a Windows 2003 Server which has the same version of the driver.Any suggestions from anyone?Kind regards,Luke Solved! Everything seems to work (so far) if on the printing preferences advanced tab I set "Advanced Printing Features" to Disabled.Would be nice to know why this causes issues when enabled, especially as by default the driver has it set to enabled when installed! Comments This entry allows you to use any printer which understands PCL 6 or PCL XL with Foomatic, at least with the basic options. See your printer's manual to know whether your printer supports PCL 6 or PCL XL. Use it only for setting up your printer if your printer is not explicitly listed in the Foomatic database. If you use this entry to set up your printer, note that not all features of your printer will be supported and that the options offered to you do not all necessarily apply to your printer.
