Submit a request Comments Daniel McIntyre October 28, 2012 11:41 [Fixed] Windows 7 64-bit, new install and fully patched through October 2012. Civ IV v1.74 refused to launch citing the "Cannot locate CD-ROM" error even with Disc 1 in the tray. Uninstalled, removed the 5.25" combo optical/card reader device http://support.2k.com/hc/en-us/articles/201333323-Cannot-Locate-CD-insert-correct-CD-upon-game-start and replaced it with a known good 5.25" DVD-RW. Re-installed and patched Civ IV 1.74. Still presented the same error. Right-clicked C:\Program Files (x86)\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Civilization4.exe, selected Properties and noticed that Compatibility Mode (XP SP3) was already on. Odd, since I didn't enable it. Selected Change settings for all users, deselected Run this program in compatibility mode, clicked Apply, OK and it works as a local admin or standard user account! Hope this helps someone else, 'cause I missed my C4 fix. Cheers, D. Micrsoft uses the same scheme for Flight Simulator 2004, and I've had the same problem with both FS2004 and Uru. I'm running Win 98SE with all of the updates/patches issued by Microsoft. The simplest solution I've found is to inactivate the ASPI (Advanced SCSI Programming Interface) layer, which is used by CD drives, CD burning programs, etc. To inactivate the ASPI layer, use Windows Explorer to find and rename APIX.VXD and WNASPI32.DLL. I rename to APIX.VXx and WNASPI32.DLx. (Do NOT delete the files!) Then, reboot your machine. If you have a ROM burner, you'll probably need to reactivate the ASPI layer when you want to use Easy CD Creator, Nero, or whatever CD/DVD burning program. Just rename the ASPI files to their original n

After I installed it, i tried to play the game but it came up with this message: Cannot Locate the CD-ROM / Please Insert the Correct CD-ROM 2K Games doesnt offer any help on this problem unless I call. But considering I live in Australia I dont want to make a $40 phone call.. I've only got one DVD so it can't be the wrong one. I've looked through previous threads but the previous thread about this problem was more of a whinge session than a support session. Can anyone help me? All ideas are welcome Cheers cakewalk, Mar 7, 2006 #1 smurfish New Member Joined: Mar 21, 2005 Messages: 35 hi and welcome to civfanatics there are a couple of cases that i've encountered, hope these can help you solve your problem. 1) Using multiple drives - If you install the game from say cd drive E for the first time, but tries to run the game from another cd drive F, it may not work coz the registry seems to keep track of the install drive. Solution - Run in drive E. 2) The game uses safedisc 4 as game protection. Certain optical drives with their out-of-the-factory firmware may not be able to read the disc properly and thus safedisc fails to complete. Solution - Update your drive's firmware. 3) If you have CD imaging programs such as Alcohol 120%, then even if you did not try to run the game via an image from such programs, safedisc might not be really happy anyway. (like, i can get Monty to Pleased and yet he can still go WAR with me in an untimely fashion :crazyeye: ). Solution - Uninstall such programs completely, removing even those registry settings if prompted to. -yours- smurfish, Mar 7, 2006 #2 cakewalk New Member Joined: Mar 7, 2006 Messages: 3 Thanks smurfish. Unfortunately I tried all of those things and it still comes up with the same message. I had daemon tools installed but i completely removed it, rebooted. downloaded new firmware and installed it. Do you know if nero affects the safedisc program at all? cakewalk, Mar 8, 2006 #3 smurfish New Member Joined: Mar 21, 2005 Messages: 35 as far as i know from myself and my friends, nero 6 (the version i'm using) does not affect safedisc prote
