This discussion is locked Brian Bard Level 1 (65 points) Q: HP 2430, HP 4300, HP 2420: repeated 49.0E00 service error I finally tracked down why all our HPs (networked and USB) were locking up when Apple users (Mac OS X.4.x) are printing. It appears to be a bug/feature in Mac OS X.4.x that bangs against a memory limitation in HP printers.Unlike previous systems, Mac OS X.4.x, sends the entire file name to the printer along with the print job. This is not a problem with Canon RIPs, etc. But long file/print job names crash all the HPs in the office.Because the print job is spooled, restarting the HPs without clearing the user's spooler(s) results in another immediate crash -- The print job(s) with long names must be deleted from the spooler(s) then the printer must be rebooted. In order to print the job, the original file must be renamed with a shorter file name. There is no firmware fix for this from HP.Bad HP! Bad!There is no way to change the default behavior of Mac OS X.4.x from Apple.Bad Apple! Also affects distribution/package Nominate for series Bug Description I have connected the HP LaserJet P3005 to the USB of a 32-bit laptop running Ubuntu Intrepid with HPLIP 2.8.6. The printer got automatically detected and set up by system-config-printer and hal-cups-utils, with the URI hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_P3005?serial=CNK2N34563 and the PostScript PPD file from HP. The hp-toolbox shows the toner level correctly, only thing what does not work is printing. When sending a job to the printer the job stays in "Processing" state forever. The error_log shows "prnt/backend/hp.c 711: INFO: open print channel failed; will retry in 30 seconds...". Additional info with a complete error_log is in the attached troubleshooting log file generated by system-config-printer. It prints and it also shows status and toner level in the HP toolbox. Configuring the printer with the web interface also works correctly. There is only one small problem which can be a bug in the PPD but I am not sure: If one sets the printer via web interface or front panel to use Economode by default you cannot switch it to normal mode via the "Economode" option. Then the printer crashes and tells on the display that one has to switch it off and on again. With the printer-internal default of Economode turned off one can turn on and off the Economode with the "Economode" option without problems. Till Kamppeter (till-kamppeter) wrote on 2008-07-
