Some must be content to upgrade from Windows 95 to Windows 98. To help those who find themselves in this situation, I’ve formulated some common troubleshooting steps to perform when you encounter protection errors after a Windows 98 upgrade.Protection error preventionTo avoid protection errors (as well as other upgrade errors), perform these recommended steps before you begin the upgrade:Uncompress your drive. If you don’t have enough drive space available, back up and delete data to make room; remove temporary Internet files, empty the Recycle Bin, and perform other disk file maintenance; or purchase a second hard disk.Run Windows 95 ScanDisk to fix any drive problems before the update. Win98SE gives "Windows protection error" during startup Okay, first things first -- my main desktop machine is refusing to start Windows except in Safe Mode. I've been completely through the Microsoft Knowledge Base topics related to "Windows protection error -- you need to restart your machine" without gaining anything (though there were a couple suggestions I couldn't carry out because I don't have CD or network access in Safe Mode or DOS). Unsure if this is related or not, but in Safe Mode, all hard and floppy disks are also reporting they're in MS-DOS Compatibility Mode and there's a warning that "Compability Mode paging reduces system performance" -- I was not in compatibility mode previously; there is no NOIDE key in the registry, and nothing changed when I removed the three BAD_IDE entries I found there (done based on other discussions of that error that I found with a Google search). This error started after a power failure; my system has been slightly flakey for a long time (continuously upgraded from DOS 3.31, via DOS 5, DOS 6/6.1/6.22, Windows 3.0/3.1, Windows 95, and Windows 98 original -- there are files on my hard disk that are 17 or 18 years old)
