Windows Protection Error Windows 98 Virtualbox
Host: 4 GB RAM, VM: 256MB RAM I am trying to set up Windows 95 on a VM using Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 with a 8 GB VHD. Everything works fine until it finishes setup, but it when it tries to start Windows for the first time, it says, "While initializing device IOS: Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer." I have tried booting up fix 95 cpu in safe mode and have formatted the VHD and reinstalled it several times, but I can't figure out why it won't work. It worked fine once before, but the hard drive it was on went bad, so I have to set it up again. Thank you for any help/solutions. Sound's something like the old >350MHz AMD CPU error:http://www.computerhope.com/issues/...Just speculating here, but you may be able to change some of the settings in VPC2K7 to "allow" for a slower CPU speed (if that indeed is the problem). I've worked with VPC2K4, but not 2K7, so I don't for sure. You may also want to try a smaller VHD partition (2GB or less)."Channeling the spirit of jboy..." You need to restart your computer. When I was installing Windows 95, during the hardware check, I got an error message about a stack overflow error. I then tried again using Safe Recovery to skip past the errant hardware. I tried using the guide found here (http://helpdesk.princeton.edu/kb/display.plx?ID=4736) to fix the problem, but I was unable to boot into Safe Mode. It is also worth mentioning that my copy of Windows is Windows 95 C (OSR 2.5) and I also managed to install Windows 98 on Windows Virtual PC without any problems. virtual-machine windows-95 microsoft-virtual-pc share|improve this question edited Dec 18 '13 at 18:44 asked Dec 18 '13 at 18:39 gparyani 1,25551738 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote accepted You've probably allocated hardware that's beyond what Windows 95 knows what to do with. Try lowering the allotted RAM to <256MB. Try shrinking the VHD to less than 1GB in size. Also, Windows 95 has problems with processors faster than 2.1GHz: Windows protection error in NDIS with a CPU that is faster than 2.1 GHz. What a bonehead I am! The README.TXT included in the OTHERS\USB folder of my Win95 CD said I could add this to Win95 OSR2. But now I get a Windows Protect Error & can only get into SAFE MODE. USBSUPP installed stuff, then re-booted, then attemtped to run it's Autoexec.Bat (which copies over VMM32.VXD). I've attempted the following to try to repair my mistake: In SAFE MODE, I REMOVED USB from Device Mgr; still same Win Protect Error. I renamed the USBSUPP Autoexec.Bat so that it doesn't run, and renamed my old Autoexec.Bat to it's original name (you see, the USBSUPP install renamed my old Autoexec.Bat to Detroit.Bat, then executes it from it's Autoexec.Bat); I still get the Win Protect Error. I renamed VMM32.020 (that what the USBSUPP Install did with my original VMM32.VXD) to VMM32.VXD; now I get a msg that VMM32.VXD is incorrect. What shall I do now? I do notice, add'ly, that the USBSUPP Bat executes something called RPLCLDR; does this explicitly tell Windows to execute a different VMM32.VXD? What is VMM32.VXD (VMM sounds like Virt M
