I usually use a DSL-based VPN connection through my ISP to connect the BDC to my corporate network. When my DSL connection goes down, I want to use a dial-up connection to link my BDC through a PPTP-based VPN to my company's Windows NT ras error code 4.0 server (which functions as a RAS server and a BDC). However, I can't make this connection work. I can dial in to the RAS server through a direct-dial connection, but when I try to connect to the PPTP server, I get a RAS 718 error. Can you help me? First, make sure that all the servers are running NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a (SP6a), which fixed known problems that relate to the symptoms you describe. If the machines all run the most recent service pack, the problem might be a timeout on the PPTP session. Such a timeout can be a result of latency on the connection (for more information, see the Microsoft article "Troubleshooting PPTP Connectivity Issues in Windows NT 4.0" at http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q162/8/47.asp). The solution is to increase the number of attempts that PPTP makes to transmit data over the connection. Locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters registry subkey. If the PPTP-TcpMaxDataRetransmissions value (of type REG_DWORD) doesn't exist under this subkey, add the value, which has a range of 0 to 0xFFFFFFFF and a default of 9h. The PPTPTcpMaxDataRetransmissions value controls the maximum number of times that the local system retransmits
whrl.pl/RcnGDD posted 2010-Aug-5, 11:29 pm ref: whrl.pl/RcnGDD posted 2010-Aug-5, 11:29 pm O.P. Hi there I've been trawling the web (and this forum) for 48 hours now and haven't yet found a solution. Really hoping somebody out there might be able to help me... apologies for the lengthy detail, but there may be some clues somewhere in there... My girlfriend and I purchased 2 prepaid mobile broadband Vodafone USB modems yesterday (1 each). We both installed the software on our respective PCs (both running Vista) and my girlfriend's has been working fine from the get-go. Mine, however, won't connect (same physical location). The software has installed fine, the USB modem is detecting a Vodafone Australia 3G signal, the software prompts for connection, then very briefly (maybe 5 seconds) connects, but with only "limited connectivity" status in the system tray. It then drops the connection completely after the 5 seconds or so. It eventually gives me a RAS error code 718. In Network and Sharing Centre, Manage Connections, I can see 2 connections for Vodafone Mobile broadband – one is a dial-up, status "disconnected", and one is a LAN or High Speed Internet connection (Local Area Network 2), status "network cable unplugged". My girlfriend's setup shows only the network connection, no dial-up. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the software 3 times, no joy. I then downloaded the latest version from the Vodafone web site – version 10.0.201.23143. Still no change. I disabled my anti-virus (McAfee), but that didn't work either. I disabled all other network connections (wi-fi, LAN), no joy. I created a manual dial-up connection – this is slightly different in that it stays connected indefinitely, but still with "limited connectivity", so no bandwidth making it through. My USB modem works on my girlfriends laptop. Her USB modem does not work on mine. So it seems to be related to the network settings/config on my laptop? I've played around with them, but nothing helped. I've run diagnostics on the connection, but nothing of note. I've checked the status of the network adapters in Device Manager, all are working OK. Any ideas gratefully received. It's driving me nuts!!! For anyone else who might stumble across this in the future, I eventually "solved" the problem by uninstalling the Vodafone VMC software, then doing a system restore of my laptop to a date prior to the original VMC install. I then created a manual dial-up – no user name
