Lately, Checkmate has been finding Volume Structure errors on my external drives, and TTP6 has been unable to repair them, giving me a 'Rebuild Errors Encountered' message. The disconnect comes when I run Disk Utility, CleanApp's File System repair Application or MacPilot and no problems are reported with the drives, yet TTP6 continues to be unable to repair the volume structures. One of the drives that reported problems with Volume Structures was found to have two bad blocks. I wiped it a few times (it was my Time Machine drive) and began to reuse it. It has been tested by Checkmate, and this time passed, though it still fails the Volume Structures test in TTP6. By the way, thanks to the improvements to Checkmate. It's really a good thing that it tells users when it's about to do its thing, though an addition that would be most welcome would be some sort of progress indicator that shows when Checkmate is working (perhaps something in the Menu bar) so that it's less of a mystery when it's finished its job. If it finds a bad block, the drive should be replaced. The older practice of reformatting the drive and writing zeros to it does not take into account the fact that if a drive passes the Surface Scan at one time and fails later, then between the two scans, some magnetic media failed, and there is no way to know when more of it will fail. If the drive that had bad blocks and was wiped now shows no bad bl

Rebuild Error Encountered Precheck Failed 09 Jul 2016 14:02 #7340 micromattech3 OFFLINE It is unlikely that the Volume Rebuild tool will be able to rebuild the disk directory of a typical Time Machine volume. The disk directory of a Time Machine volume containing N backups can be N times larger than the directory of the source volume, assuming that not many files have been deleted as the source volume is used. The Volume Rebuild tool must be able to hold the new disk directory files, the Catalog B-Tree and the Extents B-Tree, in RAM, simultaneously. Few users with large volumes have enough RAM for that to be possible. The only suggestion I can make is to run the Surface Scan to check the drive containing the Time Machine volume for unremapped bad blocks. If it passes, you can make a new Time Machine volume, but of course, it will not have older versions of files in it. For future reference, I think it is a bad strategy to rely on Time Machine as an only backup, if that is what you are doing. Time Machine is wonder

It was running Snow Leopard OS 10.6. After booting up from my TTPro 5.0.6 DVD and running some diagnostics, everything seemed to check out OK except for a volume structure error - there was a Validation rebuild error Error encountered (allocation file (bitmap)). I thought rebuilding the directory might fix the start up problem, but when I run the Volume Rebuild tool and select my internal hard drive, the "Run Volume Rebuild" is dimmed and not clickable. Do I need to get TTPro 6 to be able to run the Volume Rebuild tool? I really hope TTPro will be able to get me access to rebuild error encountered my most current data as the last full backup I have is many months old. Thanks for any help. Re: Can't run Volume Rebuild with TechTool Pro 5 28 Jan 2012 22:06 #1856 micromattech3 OFFLINE TechTool Pro should be run from a hard drive volume, not the bootable DVD, because virtual memory cannot be used when the Macintosh is booted from a locked volume, and no logs files can be reported. The program warns you to make a backup before you begin. Using the Volume Rebuild tool requires booting from another volume containing an installation of Mac OS X and TechTool Pro, such as an eDrive. Although it is not a good idea to use Volume Rebuild from the bootable DVD, it should be available. Using Volume Rebuild requires that the volume be able to be unmounted. Sometimes, volumes are not able to be unmounted because they have open files on them. Because there may be directory damage to your usual startup volume, you would have to install Mac OS X and TechTool Pro on a bootable external volume. If I had your problem, I would boot from my Mac OS X I
