The utility starts off correclty, copying the correct MDF and LDF files to the hard drive, and the configuration bar goes across the screen 4 times, before giving the following error "Rebuild master failed with error -1". I can't find anything on microsoft. I followed KB-298568 to perform this process, but the SQL Service will now not start as it cannot find the master, as it did not get rebuilt properly. I have included screen shots of the error, in the zipped up word doc. Did you check whether the .mdf and .ldf were in the right directory? Did you check whether the .mdf and .ldf were in the right directory? Yes, they appear in the correct directory, and are the correct size. July 05:28 terry External User Posts: 1 Rebuildm failed with Error 266 I am trying to run rebuildm to change the collation of SQL. I stop SQL and even have deleted sqlmangr.exe out of Task Manager "Processes". I have everything closed on the machine. SQL is definitely down - No services show in "Services". However, when I run rebuildm - after I enter where the data files are and the new collation and press Rebuild it returns an error. First One "Cannot copy master: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again" When I press OK I get "Rebuild Master failed with error 266: The copy function cannot be used. The error occurred due to a file copy failure" How can there be a connection? http://www.dbforums.com/showthread.php?977114-Rebuild-Master-Error - SQL is stopped! No one can connect - the server isn't even connected to the network. I've got everything closed! Can you please help me - This is driving me crazy -- Thanx! -- Terry Regina Qu'appelle Health Region Saskatchewan CANADA terry sponsored links 2 22nd July 05:28 sue hoegemeier External User Posts: 1 Rebuildm failed with Error 266 Try copying the files to disk first and remove the read only attribute. That's generally what causes the error you are seeing. -Sue sue http://www.mombu.com/microsoft/t-rebuildm-failed-with-error-266-210438.html hoegemeier 3 22nd July 05:32 terry External User Posts: 1 Rebuildm failed with Error 266 thanks! - Tried it but.... My db files and rebuildm are on disk The actual directory tree will not let me remove the RedOnly on the Data dir Windows Server 2003 doesn't want me to remove it - Apply it but it just reverts back to Read Only -- tried all the way up the dir structure. I went ahead anyway and created another branch for the db files and copied them to it. I ran rebuildm - it went further but came back with a different but similar error "Rebuild Master failed with error -1: the error occurred due to a file copy failure" I didn't actually attach the new set of dbs to SQL though ???? Copy the entire x86\Data directory. Select all of the files in the data directory and remove the read-only attribute. Then run rebuildm. Use this other data directory as the source directory for the data files. -Sue sue hoegemeier 5 22nd July 05:37 terry External User Posts: 1 Rebuildm failed with Error 266 We always install SQL onto another drive - usually D: So a typical install puts files/dirs on both C: and D: ..../Data exists on D: that's what I copie

Bao The other day I was trying to rebuild the master database for a SQL Server 2000 box. Everything was going well until the “Configuring Server” dialog popped http://louiebao.net/rebuild-master-failed-with-error-1/ up. The progress bar went across about 4 times and then an error https://vox.veritas.com/t5/Backup-Exec/MS-SQL-server-master-database-restore-fails/td-p/49903 message popped up. That's weird, I have rebuilt the master database a few times before and I have never encountered errors like this one. I looked for the error details and started with the cnfgsvr.out log file located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Install By looking at the log file, I could rebuild master confirm the error, but it didn’t help to explain as why the connections had failed. So I ran eventvwr. One of the system log error mentioned something about MSSQLSERVER service failed to start. At that point, I was still not sure what’d happened, so I then ran services.msc and tried to start the MSSQLSERVER service manually. The error message matched what I had rebuild master failed seen in the event viewer. Path? What path? Suddenly as if stricken by lightening, I noticed "Path to executable:" had the short file names for the path. The question became obvious, what was MICROS~3? A quick look in the explorer revealed 5 long name folders starting with the word “Microsoft”. MICROS~3 happened to be “Microsoft Office” instead of “Microsoft SQL Server”. Now the cause of the issue had been identified, I needed a way to work around it. For what I was doing at the time, I could not just reinstall SQL Server, therefore I decided to move the “80” and “mssql” folders into “Microsoft Office”. What I had effectively done was making C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~3\MSSQL\binn\sqlservr.exe a valid path. Then I reran rebuildm.exe and as expected, everything worked. -oo00oo- For more info on short file names, please refer to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles:How Windows Generates 8.3 File Names from Long File Names8.3 Short File Names not Retained after Tape RestoreHow to Disable Automatic Short File Name Generation Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on G
