Windows 2008 R2 SP1 machine to the domain and rebooted, the remote desktop services would connect, display the applying group policy setting and then terminate the session. It would throw an error when you try to connect again as if the remote desktop serviceswere notenabled. I logged into the server using iLO and noticed that the Remote Desktop Services was in a stopped state. Check the system log and found the error 7031 with a description "The Remote Desktop Services service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 2 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 60000 milliseconds: Restart the service." Started the service and tried logging in again and issue repeated. However I was able to log in as a https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2479710 local administrator after the service was started. It was only crashing when the login was attempted using a domain account. Spent some time troubleshooting and finally hit on KB 2667402 which explained the reason for this behavior to be a security update which places a wrong version of the Rdpcorekmts.dll file. The explanation is as below. "After you install security update 2667402 on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, and then you install http://coolwizard.blogspot.com/2012/05/win2008-r2-sp1-remote-desktop-services.html Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, the binary version of Rdpcorekmts.dll is 6.1.7600.16952 and not 6.1.7601.17767. In this scenario, you may be unable to create a remote desktop session to control the Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer. " Uninstalled the KB 2667402 and rebooted and the ghost vanished and it let me connect on remote desktop. Was tempted to reinstall the KB and see the result, but didn't. As per the article reinstalling the KB should resolve the issue. Just run into an identical issue and your post guided me to exactly what we needed to do.A little extra from me - you don't actually need to reboot after removing KB2667402. Once you've uninstalled it, just start the Remote Desktop Services service, and you'll then be able to RDP on straightaway.ReplyDeleteAnonymousMay 30, 2012 at 4:14 PMI had a similar issue except that the local admin account also failed. Uninstalled the KB2667402 and it sorted the issue. Re-installed it and it was still OK so seems to be an interaction with SP1 and updates. Thanks very much Jejin for the post and the solution. Really appreciatedReplyDeleteAnonymousJune 14, 2012 at 6:05 AMthank the gods, dude you rock!

Here is the scenario- you have a Server 2008 R2 remote desktop box setup as a Remote Desktop server (or Remote App server). You install SP1 and RDP stops working. You see that the Remote Desktop Services service has shut down. In the event viewer you are seeing this:Source: Service Control ManagerEvent ID: 7031 or 7034Text: The Remote Desktop Services service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). You try to install it but that update fails. (or, if it does install then your problem should be fixed). Here is the fix if KB2667402 won't install. The file rdpcorekmts.dll located at %systemroot%\windows\system32 is the wrong version. If it's any version prior to 6.1.7601.17767 then this is your problem. You'll need to replace that file with the correct version (don't ask me why it's not updated correctly through other updates or SP1). I pulled mine off another SP1 box that was working correclty. To rename the 'bad' file you'll need to shut down the Remote Desktop Services service then not only take ownership of the file but also give yourself full rights to the file. Otherwise you won't be able to rename it (you want to rename it just for the sake of keeping a backup file- just in case). BTW- this ownership/rights issue may be the
