upgrading my home server from Windows Server 2012 to Windows Server 2012 R2, I've been unable to RDP to it from the mac cannot connect to the windows-based computer my Mac OS X laptop. I use the Microsoft RDP client that comes with Microsoft Office for Mac 2011. There are other alternatives around that may be better - I've heard CoRD mentioned a few https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn473006(v=ws.11).aspx times, but I'm happy using the Microsoft one. Well, happy enough given I can't connect to my primary server. I would always receive the error ‘Remote Desktop Connection cannot verify the identity of the computer that you want to connect to.' Most frustrating. Update (22 October): I've published a new post here describing the new Microsoft RDP Client for Mac OS X that is perfectly compatible with Windows Server 2012 https://blog.mikejmcguire.com/2013/10/15/r2-d2-you-know-better-than-to-trust-a-strange-computer-why-doesnt-the-mac-os-x-rdp-client-trust-windows-server-2012-r2-2/ R2. I was able to fix the problem so that I could connect. This involved dictating which security layers will be used by the Remote Desktop Session Host on the server itself. There are three options to the security layer configuration, mind you it's essentially two options with an auto-negotiate setting. Negotiate. As it should be in most situations, Windows' first thought it to negotiate with the client to select a mutually supported security layer. RDP. This is the original RDP security layer, its supported by 3rd party RDP clients. TLS. TLS is the stronger security layer, but not as widely supported. This configuration item is applied by Group Policy. Specifically… Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Security The setting is called Require use of specific security layer for remote (RDP) connections. Now this can be configured either by a group policy within an Active Directory environment, or by a local policy (Start -> Run -> GPEdit.MSC) if you don't have a domain, or don't want to create a GPO specifically for this purpose in your domain. We're able to take a leaf out of some government play books here, which is to disable the negotiation option, and then hold fast on a weaker position. The fix he

Solution First make sure you have the most current version of the Microsoft RDP application from the Apple App Store microsoft remote desktop and try again. If that doesn't solve the problem enable RDP security layer in Group Policy on the machine: Verify that the firewall allows remote desktop connections with RDP (Port 3389) Click Start > Run. Type gpedit.msc and click OK. Result: The Group Policy Editor will open. In the left hand side bar, expand Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host. Select Security. Change "Require use of specific security layer for remote desktop (RDP) connection" to Enabled and select RDP in the Options pane. Change "Require user authentication for remote connections by using Network Level Authentication" to Disabled. Close Group Policy Editor and reboot the machine for changes to take effect. Mac often seems to have difficulty resolving host name in the same format they are used in Windows. In my case a connection with the host name in Windows will connect successfully and giving me an error 131084 in Mac.Best regards, Xavier Fortin about 2 months ago Ryan KrenzischekPosts: 10 Xavier,Thanks for responding. I've tried both the fully qualified hostname and IP address connecting to the host. Both result in 131084. I'd like to know why it's throwing an error but for some reason I can't get the software to generate any type of debug log.Ryan about 2 months ago Xavier FortinPosts: 200 The log works on my side.Does the file w10.log already exists at said directory? Do you have write permission on it? Or do you have write permission on parent folders?Maybe there is something in your application log. Could you send it to me via private message. You can find it in the app this way: Help > View Application Log > Click Open. There should be a RemoteDesktopManager.log.Best regards Xavier Fortin about 2 months ago Ryan KrenzischekPosts: 10 Yes, I do have read and write access to the file. I touched it. I own the directory where the file is being written to.$ touch w10.log$ echo "hello world" > w10.log$ cat w10.log hello worldThe program refuses to put anything in the log file.I'll PM you and send the application log. It's more of the same error message.Thank you. about 2 months ago Ryan KrenzischekPosts: 10 I wanted to post an update here that I was able to connect via IP address but not by hostname.
