It's had several anomalous reboots, and finally got stuck in a crcdisk sys vmware state where it couldn't finish booting. When I attempt to boot into Safe Mode, the last driver that appears before the process freezes is \Windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys. How can I restore/overrwrite a file so that the machine boots again - or am I just out of luck on this? As a note, I already tried booting from the install media and running StartRep.exe - it claimed to have repaired something, but the problem persisted and there was no visible change. It's sad that there are so many unanswered questions out there that are about pretty much this circumstance. If you have been reading along, you'll know crcdisk.sys location that it's been about a week now that I have been trying to install crcdisk.sys vista hang fix Windows Server 2008 onto an IBM x335. When booting to safe mode, the console displays a list of the drivers that it successfully loads. It always froze as soon as it displayed the crcdisk.sys driver. My research indicated that this was an indicator that this driver was loaded without a problem, so I went on a mission to find out what driver was loading next, and failing. I spent way too much time on Google and really didn't get anywhere. There were tons of MSDN forum posts about this, or similar, issues. The commonality between them seemed to be either IBM equipment or raid arrays. Still, none of the suggestions were helpful. The answer though was so simple, I feel quite foolish even mentioning it. I will though, so that you don't need to feel foolish hunting for it. This particular server is about 6 years old and is no longer being supported by the manufacturer. I did however find the most current firmware and drivers on the manufacturers website. The firmware is pretty easy to do, you need to download UpdateXpress (version 4.05 for this particular model) and burn it to a CD. This bootable disk will continually reboot and update firmware for each piece of hardware

This is a white box and I am not sure what motherboard is in it, however, I do know the RAID card is an Adaptec 2230S, which has drivers on the 2008 install media server 2008 crcdisk and no newer drivers that I can find. So the suggestion I found that said to load newer drivers is out. Some more googling suggested I may have a bad media disk, which I suspect might be a very real possibility. I think this because when I am installed in the initial steps the "copy files" part is over almost instantaneously then it expands the files accordingly which takes an acceptable amount of time and finishes its stuff then the system reboots but then it hangs. I am downloading a technet copy of the disk to try and install from that but I am looking to see if any of you have additional suggestions. Or resolutions, or confirmation of my suspicions. As I thought it might be bad media, I also thought it could be dirty media. As a last ditch effort while I was downloading all 2.5GB of the std DVD, I cleaned the disk and just tried reinstalling, while I typed the system got past the CRCDISK.sys hang and is continuing with the install. When safe mode loads the drivers, and you see it hang up on "crcdisk.sys" there are several possible causes: 1) If the registry has become corrupt or changed and "crcdisk.sys" is trying to reference an entry there is a possibility that the computer will no longer be able to start up and shut down correctly. 2) The second possibility is that the Crcdisk.sys file itself is corrupt. 3) If the computer has more than one OS installed on partitioned drives. The easiest solution is to do a repair from the Recovery Console. Using the "fixboot" and "fixmbr" commands might resolve the problem. If not, you can use the OS disc to attempt a repair.
