Apparently you have access enabled for domain users. The same would hold true for the machines outside of the network ... the user accounts that the users are logged in with will not be domain accounts. I presume you are associating the smart card with a specific user ID. It would seem to me that you want to detect the account that is connecting and if a domain account use those credentials a

Remote Desktop and Terminal Services No Longer Working - An authentication error smart card authentication web application has occurred (Code: 0x80090327) Windows Server > Windows Server 2008 R2 General - Read Only Question 0 smart card authentication protocol Sign in to vote HelloI recently set up a Windows 2008 R2 Server in order to be able to test the new terminal services features and everything was https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/24284353/Smart-Card-Logon-An-authentication-error-has-occurred.html working really well except that if the RemoteApps were hosted on a seperate server people had to log in twice. In an attempt to enable Single Sign-On on the rdweb site I have inadvertantly done something to stop RemoteApp and Remote Desktop working at all now. When I try a standard remote desktop connection externally I now get:An authentication error https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/4f76fdd1-0a93-4e88-a0fe-52fc5f9a6ab1/remote-desktop-and-terminal-services-no-longer-working-an-authentication-error-has-occurred-code?forum=windowsserver2008r2general has occurred (Code: 0x80090327).I also receive this error when trying to launch a remote app so cannot access the server at all now.I have tried to undo the settings I changed however I still cannot clear the error.Internally Remote Desktop and RemoteApp still work but not externally due to the above error. After Bing'ing it seems that it is something to do with the certificate or possibly smart cards but I have added the ca cert into the trusted root certification authority on the external machines and the common name on the certificates is now *.domain.I believe the connection does go through the rd gateway which is www.domain and the apps are accessed as computer.domain so a certificate of *.domain should work. Also I do not use smart cards. As I said I had all this working before but must have changed something to stop it working. I tested it externally on Windows XP and Windows 7 and it worked before but not now. Thanks for any help with this.RobinRobin Wilson Tuesday, August 18

connecting through RDP.The weird thing is, this error only pops upusing the DNS name. If I use the IP of the server, I connect with no issues or errors. Does anyone have any ideas? Please let me know Thank you Devon December 29th, 2014 9:22pm Hi Devon, Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum. Whats your client OS and RDP version you are using? From your description it occurs that there is issue resolving IP address with Hostname through DNS, so need to check the DNS record to see whether Hostname I mapped with IP address. Initially you can also try to clear DNS cache and try to flush with below command. Ipconfig /flushdns Then you can check using nslookup command whether you can resolve IP address from Hostname. You can check following articles for DNS troubleshooting. - Cannot Connect to Remote Systems Using Host Name - Troubleshooting DNS Servers Hope it helps! Thanks.
