S.M.A.R.T error can I recover my RAID Discussion in 'Hardware, Software & Troubleshooting' started by |*BILLY$CLINT*|, Aug 5, 2009. |*BILLY$CLINT*| I smart test failed error code 303 make things happen! Joined: Jan 25, 2008 Messages: 532 Likes Received: 0 This past weekend my computer's Intel storage matrix alerted me to an error in drive 2 of my RAID configuration. I ran a test on the hard drive and found out that http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/184619en the error is a S.M.A.R.T electrical error. The drive still works and I know that a S.M.A.R.T errors means that the drive can still function but it's just a matter of time before it fails completely. I do have a 750 gig seagate replacement drive for the failing one but I am not 100% sure if I can re-build my RAID array on the new drive as I don't know that much about hardware I am afraid. I am also unsure of the RAID configuration of my drives https://forums.beyondunreal.com/threads/s-m-a-r-t-error-can-i-recover-my-raid.187443/ (its either 0 or 1) because I do have a C:/ and a D:/ drive, the D:/ is a windows back up drive and from what I have read in the documentation from Intel I have a RAID 1 but there software says that it's a, "RAID 0(stripping)" which is confusing to say the least. The computer is working just fine and I have not noticed any errors in fact I am using it to post right now as I copy my most crucial data to my external. Normally in this situation I would re-format but I am using about half of my 1.5 terabytes of space as I do a lot of work from home so this down time would make me suffer. So any advice on what to do or even letting me know I am screwed would be nice as well. I just really want to know what I should do next so I can be as prepared as possible. The funny thing is I turned my PC on that day to look into adding new partions to my hard drive one for work one for personal...LOL talk about being a day late and a dollar short! |*BILLY$CLINT*|, Aug 5, 2009 #1 haarg PC blowticious Joined: Apr 24, 2002 Messages: 1,928 Likes Received: 0 It sounds from your post like are currently using 2 750GB drives in RAID 0 mode, which means if either drive fails you will lose everything. Since you say you are only using about half of the 1.5TB, I would recommend hooking up the replacement dri

One of the hard drives has started to make smart hard disk a grinding noise, and the array is currently rebuilding. We'd like to interrogate the S.M.A.R.T. values on the Seagate drives, but for some reason none of the programs we've tried have been able to read the S.M.A.R.T. values. Is there any technique for reading the S.M.A.R.T. values out so we can tell which drive is on its last legs? hard-drive smart share|improve this question edited Mar 23 at 12:31 Hennes 51.2k776121 asked Sep 2 '11 at 14:53 Contango 74431231 What programs did you try? –digitxp Sep 2 '11 at 15:06 HDDlife and AShampoo HDD Control. I think the problem is that all of the drives appear as one large drive thats 6GB in size (its RAID 5). Its almost like we need something to bypass the RAID controller and peer directly into the hard drive controller itself to work out which hard drive is on its last legs. –Contango Sep 2 '11 at 15:10 Most of the Smartctl diagnostic software for windows supports reading the smartctl of the harddrives behind the raid array. –Trevor Boyd Smith Sep 1

Which to trust? up vote 1 down vote favorite I've had a RAID1 setup running in my machine for a couple of years, and recently the array has become degraded. Looking at mdadm information, it looks like the one drive has failed, but when I look at SMART info, the other drive has had errors. I'm not sure which to trust. If I'm reading the output of sudo mdadm --detail /dev/md0 correctly, /dev/sda1 has failed, and /dev/sdb1 is still in the array, and can be trusted. /dev/md0: Version : 1.2 Creation Time : Sat Jan 5 01:18:40 2013 Raid Level : raid1 Array Size : 2930133824 (2794.39 GiB 3000.46 GB) Used Dev Size : 2930133824 (2794.39 GiB 3000.46 GB) Raid Devices : 2 Total Devices : 1 Persistence : Superblock is persistent Update Time : Thu Aug 6 20:33:11 2015 State : clean, degraded Active Devices : 1 Working Devices : 1 Failed Devices : 0 Spare Devices : 0 Name : storm:0 (local to host storm) UUID : 98b434f9:54d5c413:1acc4033:8ad34365 Events : 8388 Number Major Minor RaidDevice State 0 0 0 0 removed 1 8 17 1 active sync /dev/sdb1 However, after running a short SMART self-test on both drives, /dev/sda has no issues, but /dev/sdb is showing things like this: === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Device
