Advertisement: Resolution/Fix: First you will want to verify that the hard drive is secured inside the laptop, and that all appropriate padding foam is in place. If the drive is secured appropriately, you should then make sure the data how to fix smart hard disk error sony vaio cable for the drive is secured as well. This should of course be done by an authorized Sony technician. If everything is appropriately secured, then there is a final option to adjust the detection settings. Click the Start button and then click All Programs . In the All Programs menu, click VAIO Central . In the VAIO Central window, on the Categories tab, click the plus (+) next to Security to expand the selection. Under Security , click Hard Disk Drive Protection Settings and then click the Open button. In the VAIO HDD Protection window, configure the appropriate settings. That will allow you to reduce the sensitivity of the sensor, and it is possible to turn it off. However that is not recommended as the drive will not be protected from any accidental bumps or drops. This would not be any less than a laptop without the fall protection feature. The only answer I have is the SAME as the reply you received in your post to C/net. Go through the Bios Settings again. http://forums.cnet.com/5208-61.....ID=2831115 Seems to be some?? problems with these drives but can't confirm. Regards, Rick P. Reports: · Posted 8 years ago Top ScottW Posts: 6609 This post has been reported. Val, I was thinking that the manufacturer's diagnostic utility would help. For example, the Hitachi Storage DFT utility will allow you to disable SMART monitoring. However, my research shows that Toshiba does not make a diagnostic utility for their drives. Bad, Toshiba, bad! Personally, I have to agree with the poster at c|net who says this is really bad. SMART is very poor at detecting, and especially predicting, hard drive failures. If I had a drive with a SMART failure, I would back up the data and replace it ASAP. One last possibility is to use SpinRite from Gibson Research. It can move data to good sectors, mark bad sectors as unusable, restore good sectors incorrectly marked as bad, and then it will reset the SMART error info. The problem is that at $89 US, it's not really economical for a single use. Still, maybe you have other uses for it that would make it worthwhile.
