: spooler subsystem app encountered problem close bijayprusti 17 September 2013 15:14:44 Worse - it won't start back-up! I have twice had this problem where the print spooler ceases working entirely using both https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/sharepoint/en-US/c7dcc61b-787e-4e49-b154-ac4d44198d35/how-can-i-fix-error-spooler-subsystem-app-has-encountered-a-problem-and-needs-to-close-on-windows?forum=winserverfiles Windows XP and Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit OSs. This is not a virus, it's a bug. My experience is that the Microsoft Automated Trouble Shooting Service tool will not fix the problem, nor will rebooting the machine, and any number of other fixes I have seen recommended on-line. In Vista 32 the failure of the spooler can also prevent all of the printers http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1800918/spooler-subsystem-app-encountered-problem-close.html icon images from being displayed in the control panel, making it very difficult or impossible to uninstall and re-intall printers. The solution is two steps, both fortunately fairly simple: Step 1: Look in C:\Windows\System32\Spool\PRINTERS\ folder. If you have a 64 bit OS it will be a System64 folder. You will find one or more files with an .SHD extension. Delete all of these files. When you print the next time, the spooler will re-create these files without the offending content in them. Then reboot your machine. This should solve the problem for the operating system and print spooler, but you still need to fix the file you are trying to print, or the problem will re-occur. Step 2: The problem appears to come from MS-Office (both 2003 and 2007 versions) when users imbed graphic files in office documents and the edge of the graphic falls outside the edge of the document page as displayed on the screen in the program. It is not always obvious that this is the case, as the background for the graphic image may be transparent. The print spooler problem can occur when printing directly from programs like MS-Word

They normally have an HP printer, either a laserjet 1012/1018/1020 and the error normally comes up whenever a user attempts to print an attachment (usually a pdf) which initiates the problem. My question would be why does this happen? What exactly is causing this issue and what can I do to eliminate it from my network besides uninstalling the printers all together? Has anyone been able to find the link between Adobe and the this issue? windows-xp printer print-spooler share|improve this question edited Mar 21 '14 at 16:56 Oliver Salzburg♦ 56.2k36185245 asked May 17 '11 at 16:19 Rein Sangeki 82137 I had a similar issue. Somehow or another a job was corrupted. I had to clear the print queue to fix it. –Jeff F. Uninstalling Adobe Reader 9 and then installing Adobe Reader X (version 10) seems to resolve this problem, but upgrading from 9 to X does not. Don't upgrade - download Adobe Reader X, do a complete uninstall of 9, then a fresh install of X. If you have any print jobs that are crashing the print spooler, you'll also need to clear those out of the queue manually. These print jobs are usually stored under: C:\Windows\System32\Spool\Printers If they're not there, then check the following Windows Registry setting
