Server 2008 (Express Edition) on Windows 7, the SQL Server service was not starting up. The SQL Server Error Log had the following entries in it. Starting up

An error occurred data encryption sql server during encryption. I remembered reading Balmukund‘s blog post regarding a similar issue. But in this case SQL Server was not running on a FAT file system. The SQL Server service was configured to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2387754 start using the Local System account. Hence this KB article was the right fit. The reason for the SQL Server service not starting up is that the Network Service account does not have permissions on the C:Documents and SettingsNetworkServiceApplication DataMicrosoftProtect folder. After granting Full Control to the Network Service account on the Protect folder, SQL Server service started successfully. Related posts: SQL Service does not start.
