That's the name you need to test with. 1433 is just the default port, you need to find out what port you are using it and use that to test it. You can see the port in SQL Server Configuration Manager or in the SQL Server Error Log (it mentions it at startup).Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/Subscribe to my blog Shookums Starting Member USA 13 Posts Posted-06/14/2010: 18:17:34 I did the cmd to host - got that but I do not see the error report-where I was trying to open and get the errors are at the ODCB, click on the database then hit the lo

Connection Failed: Sqlstate: '08001'
SQL Server, SQLState: '01000' Microsoft Office for Developers > Access for Developers Question 0 Sign in to vote Hi When I run a query like below against one remote SQL Server then it works fine and returns the http://www.sqlteam.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=146017 required data; SELECT * FROM [ODBC;Driver=SQL Server;SERVER=Server1.com;DATABASE=MyDatabase;UID=MyUser;PWD=MyPass].MyTable However when I run the same query against a second remote SQL Server it gives me below error; Connection failed: SQLState: '01000' SQL Server Error: 14 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionOpen (Invalid Instance()). Connection failed: SQLState: '08001' SQL Server Error: 14 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]Invalid connection. I can otherwise access the second SQL Server fine. So it would seem there is something minor missing in the second server configuration https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/7be7d51c-f09f-4c40-8520-da2cd642bfbf/connection-fails-with-remote-sql-server-sqlstate-01000?forum=accessdev that blocks running the query in this way. What is it I need to do on the problematic SQL Server to have me run the query fine? For example not "Server=myMachine" but "Server=myMachine\SQL2008". If you use SSMS to browse for servers, it will show all servers and their instance names.-Tom.
