Failure In Connecting To Sql Server Workflow Manager
to vote I have been having an issue trying to make a ODBC connection to my SQL Server 2008 R2 Express. I have express on my laptop (Windows 7), I have successfully in the past created a connection but now it will not connect citing: "Connection failed: SQL State:'08001' SQL Server error: 2 [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0] Named pipes provider: microsoft sql server 2012 error 2 Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2] Connection Failed: SQLState:'HYT00' SQL Server Error: 0 [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0] Login timeout expired" The server name is JMAH-PC\SQLEXPRESS using Windows Authentication and a username of JMAH-PC\JMAH. I have even tried a connection string: "Driver={SQL Server Native Client 10.0};Server=JMAH-PC\SQLEXPRESS;Database=SCU;Trusted_Connection=yes;" What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Joe Wednesday, November 30, 2011 2:11 AM Reply | Quote Answers 2 Sign in to vote The first thing to check would be to see if the if the Named Pipes protocol has been enabled on the server. Use the SQL-Server Configuration Manager to see what are the protocols that have been enabled on both the client side and the server side. In the case of the TCP/IP protocol, there is also this eternal question about a connection bloqued by the firewall on either the client side or the server side; so you should temporarily deactivate the firewalls on both side to check for that possibility. Using Windows Authentication between two machines can also be a challenge if you are using workgroups instead of a

Connection Failed error connecting to MS SQL Server Expert 2.5K+ P: 2,765 Seth Schrock I'm trying to add a data source to my computer through the http://dba.fyicenter.com/faq/sql_server_2/Getting_Connection_failed_Error_on_DSN_Creation.html ODBC Data Source wizard. However, I keep getting an error that says Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers ConnectionFailed: SQLState:'01000' SQLServerError:2 [Microsoft][ODBCSQLServerDriver][SharedMemory]ConnectionOpen(Connect()). ConnectionFailed: SQLState:'08001' SQLServerError:17 [Microsoft][ODBCSQLServerDriver][SharedMemory]SQLServerdoesnotexistoraccessdenied I'm running SQL Server 2005 and today is sql server my first day using it. I know that the server exists, so I'm thinking that the problem is the access denied part. I have created a test database called "Testing" just to see how to connect to it through Access. I'm using Windows Authentication. I added my username to the logins list and gave it every possible server role and connecting to sql mapped the user to the Testing database. I have turned on TCP/IP connections to allow remote PCs to be able to connect to it. At this point, I haven't been able to find anything else to try. This is 100% new to me. Thankfully, my extremely limited knowledge of MySQL has help a little, but not much. Mar 11 '13 #1 Post Reply Share this Question 2 Replies Expert 2.5K+ P: 2,765 Seth Schrock After trying anything and everything that I could think of, I discovered the problem. When I was selecting the server, it just listed the host name of the server and didn't include the server instance. So now my SQL Server that I'm connecting to is TESTLAPTOP\SQLEXPRESSTEST instead of just TESTLAPTOP. I'm now able to create the data source just as I want it. the previous tutorial. After clicking Next on the SQL login information screen, ODBC manager will try to connect to the SQL Server with the login information you provided. After a period of waiting time, you may get error message box saying that: Connection failed: SQLState: '01000' SQL Server Error: 53 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB] ConnectionOpen(Connect()). Connection failed: SQLState: '08001' SQL Server Error: 17 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB] SQL Server does not exist or access denied. See the picture below: Three possible reasons for the failing: Wrong server name - You provided an incorrect server name. SQL Server not configured to take a network connection - You need to check the SQL Server configuration. Wrong login name or password - You provided incorrect login name or password. The first and third reasons are easy to validate and correct. The second reason requires further investigation.
