They then need to get everyone out of the system and sqlstate 08001 error 17 reboot the server again. Restarting SQL Server doesn't fix the problem. On the Server we are using the default dynamic port allocation, with TCPIP as the protocol. We have also tried turning off the firewall on the Windows 7 machines. The same errors occured when we used Windows Authentication instead of SQL Server Authentication. SQL Server 2005 Express is installed on the Server on a SBS 2003 network. All the PC's are logged onto the domain, and the DSN-less ODBC connection is set up using the following: "Driver={SQL Server};Server=ssss;Database=CarerData;UID=uuuu;PWD=pppp" where ssss=Server\Instance; uuuu=User ID; pppp=Password. Please help - we are running out of ideas. There is no way to leave that state unless restarting the client machine (win7) If this is the case, you may do some troubles

Make sure the SQL Server Browser service is started on the SQL Server computer. Make sure TCP/IP is enabled. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191294(v=sql.110).aspx Try to disable Windows Firewall or security software on both, SQL Server instance and client computer. Test basic connectivity too. Try to ping from the client computer to the SQL Server computer. Hope this helps. We've been using 2k but I decided to try 2k8 to compare. I sql server error installed in on our win2k3 server alongside mssql2k. In the ODBC applet on the server, I was able to set up access to 2k8, and it passes the test at the end successfully, whether I tell it to use Windows Authentication or an sql login. The latter is how the app always accessed mssql2k. The app works fine from the server, but when I try it on a workstation (winxpsp3), I get a window titled, "Microsoft SQL Server Login" that says: Connection failed: SQLState: '01000' SQL Server Error: 53 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionOpen (Connect()). Connection failed: SQLState: '08001' SQL Server ERror: 17 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not exist or access denied. Then I get the ODBC login dialog, which I can't get to login correctly (I just keep getting the same error above), even copying and pasting a password after resetting it on the server, and whether "trusted" is checked or not. "Options" is disabled. The server was straight SERVERNAME for mssql2k, but for mssql2k8 it's called SERVERNAME\mssql2008. That works on the server, why not on the workstation?

It was working when SQL Server was on my computer but now i'm trying to connect to a server So when I create the DSN file with access I chose SQL-Server driver ( I have also tried with SQL-Server native 10.0 ) I enter the server name that I copied from SQL Management Studio so there's no typo there I chose the NT authentication Then I have this error In the properties, I tried with TCP/IP with the default port 1433 and I also tried with the name pipes I made sure that the checkbox to allow remote connection is checked If I try to connect with management studio I got this error I can see the server when I browse on the network I'm trying this troubleshotting but i'm stuck with the telnet command. It says Could not open connection to host on 1433 I also tried with no port and i got the same error on port 23 Any ideas? The error you get in Access is obscure by default, but the line item in the error log might reveal more information both in the message text and in the message state. If you get a particular state number you might check this reference: sqlblog.com/blogs/aa
