When using SQL Authentication odbc connection failed sql server 2008 the connection works, however the application that uses the ODBC connection requires Windows Authentication to be used. It is important to note that I am using the 32 bit connection manager to set odbc connection error my ODBC data sources. When I try to use Windows Authentication I receive the following message: Connection failed: SQLState: 'HY000' SQL Server Error: 0 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver] Cannot generate SSPI context Now I've received this error message elsewhere due to DNS issues but in this case I have done all that I

can to eradicate DNS as being the cause. The client PC can resolve the server name and IP via DNS. I've also checked and double checked the DNS servers and flushed the cache, just to be sure. I've scoured the internet over the past couple of days, looking for a solution tothe problem; I've processed and digested http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811889along with responses from this forum and also results from Google. The time on the client, the SQL Server and the domain controller are all the same; likewise the SQL Service account has permission to read and write the Server Principal Name (of which there are no duplicates). Nothing jumps out from either the SQL logs or the clients event logs. I have 3 SQL Servers all on the same domain and all accessed from a number of desktops running Windows XP or Windows 7, the client I am working on gets the same message regardless of which of these 3 servers are connected to. I find myself well and truly stumped. Can anyone recommend any other avenues of investigation for me to follow? Many thanks in advance for any help or suggestions that can be provided. I'm at a client location plugged into their network, but when I https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/0edcd797-d0d0-46b0-8d1c-b610fc0f18f7/cannot-generate-sspi-context?forum=sqldataaccess log into my laptop I'm not logging into their domain. I have to access their network by typing in the name and password they gave me.I cannot seem to access the database from my computer. I try to create an ODBC data source in the administrative tools, but the drop down list of detected SQL servers does not show the server I am trying to connect to. The weird thing is, it does show many other SQL servers on their network... http://www.sqlteam.com/forums/topic.asp?topic_id=100069 just not the one that I'm trying to connect to. And I know that the one I want to connect to is working correctly because if I remote desktop into one of their machines (which is logged onto their domain), I can see it fine in the drop down.Does anybody know how I can get a connection to this database from my computer, even though I'm not on the domain? Thanks! jhocutt Constraint Violating Yak Guru USA 385 Posts Posted-04/01/2008: 13:30:08 Just type the name."God does not play dice" -- Albert Einstein"Not only does God play dice, but he sometimes throws them where they cannot be seen." -- Stephen Hawking prosh0t Starting Member 5 Posts Posted-04/01/2008: 13:59:34 Hi! Thanks for the reply. cool quotes by the way.I did that using 'windows nt authentication' and got an error:Connection failed:SQLState: 'HY000'SQL Server Error: 0[Microsoft][ODCB SQL Server Driver]'Cannot generate SSPI context'when I try to use SQL server authentication specifying a name and password, I get 'login failed for user'. I know that the name and password I specify work because when I'm remote desktopped in to a machine on the domain with that same name and password, I am able to add the odbc data source to the same machine using windows authentication. So why would my name/pw combo work when logged into the domain (using windows authentication), but when I am off the domain using sql server authentication th

Here's what's going on. I've got a server, which I'm calling MYSERVER, running Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005. Right on this server itself, I've got an ODBC connection set up pointing at itself, and that already works perfectly. I log in using SQL Server Authentication (not Windows authentication), and it's set up like this: Like I said, that one works. But next, I've got another computer which is on a totally different domain/not on the intranet, that needs to access this same SQL Server hosted on MYSERVER. Because it's on a different domain, it doesn't recognize the name "MYSERVER"; I have to point it at the IP address of MYSERVER, which we'll say is 123.456.789.012. But the ODBC connection doesn't seem to work there. I tried setting it up like this: This doesn't work. When I put in the username and password and press Next, it stalls for a good 10 to 20 seconds, and then finally comes back with the following error: Connection failed: SQLState: '01000' SQL Server Error: 1326 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionOpen (Connect()). Connection failed: SQLState: '08001' SQL Server Error: 17 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not exist or access denied. If I try the same thing, but change the "server" from 123.456.789.012\SQLEXPRESS to just plain old 123.456.789.012, I get a different error:
