I have a serious problem with SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
I have a V-Server with the administration panel Plesk installed. Together with Plesk, MSDE was installed. I tried https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/a0c0d1f4-6ea4-455b-abb1-4c8234265198/could-not-load-the-dll-xpstar90dll-or-one-of-the-dlls-it-references-reason-126?forum=sqlkjmanageability to upgrade from MSDE to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition but that did not work because I always got an error that the xpstar90.dll or one of its references could not be load. I tried several things but it did not work, so I ordered a re-installation of the Windows Server 2006 x64 Datacenter Edition. To ensure that I could run SQL Server 2005 I installed https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/358024/could-not-load-the-dll-xpstar90-dll-or-one-of-the-dlls-it-references SQL Server before installing the Plesk panel. I did so and everything worked fine. After completing the installation of Plesk (this time without MSDE), the SQL Server Configuration Manager only showed to me, that "MMC could not create the snap-in" and the SQL Management Studio does not start ("Application could not be initializied (0xc0150004)"). I thought "ok, I have the remote configuration option", and I tried it. I started the SQL Management Studio on my Home-PC and connected to my Server. But when I try to create a new database, attach a database or try to do several other things I always get the error that xpstar90.dll or one of its referenced could not be load (Error 5: Not found).
When I try to reinstall it or install a secound instance of SQL Server 2005 says the same and the installation aborts.
I checked whether the xpstar90.dll exists in the
IBM but my main intention is to explain the benefit of another nice tool : Dependency Walker (http://www.dependencywalker.com/)Issue :SQL Server Agent failed to come up after the service account password was reset at AD level .Error(s) :In the event http://ms-abhay.blogspot.com/2010/08/could-not-load-dll-xpstar90dll-or-one.html log you will see these errors in sequence :Description:Could not load the DLL xpstar90.dll, or one of the DLLs it references. Reason: 126(The specified module could not be found.).Description:Failed to retrieve SQLPath for syssubsystems population.Description:SQLServerAgent could not be started http://forums.asp.net/t/1712522.aspx?SqlServer+Agent+is+not+working (reason: Failed to load any subsystems. Check errorlog for details.).The first error is the main error and rest are the errors following the first error and we need not to think about them .Troubleshooting and Resolution :The error sql server clearly says that either there is a problem with xpstar90.dll or the other dlls that this dll references .This file is located in I first tried to re-register xpstar90.dll by using regsvr32 xrstar90.dll and got this message :xpstar90.dll was loaded , But the dllRegisterServer entry point was not found.I have heard that sometimes there is a different way of registering some DLLs , so by this error I did not come to the conclusion that this file could not load is corrupt.I was also thinking that there might be some other DDL that this DLL refers to , which got corrupted.I decided to see the tree structure of xpstar90.dll in Dependency Walker . I opened the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Binn\xpstar90.dll in it and go this output. So, in this case XPSTAR90.DLL itself was corrupt .I found its version 2005.90.4035.0 and replaced it with another one that I had in another instance .SQL Agent came online .In case if it dos not , then we need to uninstall Native client from ADD Remove Programs and reinstall it .Happy learningAbhay Posted by Abhay at 2:48 PM Reactions: Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest No comments: Post a Comment Newer Post Older Post Home Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom) Total Pageviews Follow by Email There was an error in this gadget Followers Blog Archive ► 2012 (3) ► January (3) ► 2011 (9) ► July (1) ► June (7) ► April (1) ▼ 2010 (18) ► November (2) ► September (4) ▼ August (2) Could not load the DLL xpstar90.dll, or one of the...
