| 3 | More > Error Logs ProblemMy SQL Server 2005 error log is getting very large due to auditing login activity and freezes Management Studio when it loads. On another SQL Server I have lost dbcc shrinkfile sql server 2005 much of the historical error log data from SQL Server service restarts and Windows sql server dbcc checkident reboots. Do I have any options to address these two needs to review and retain this data in an easy manner? SolutionYes -
Sql Server Dbcc Checktable
A few options are available to address the size and number of error logs for both SQL Server and SQL Server Agent. Let's break these down as well as outline another alternative to review these files without https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/272318 locking Management Studio. SQL Server Error Log To limit the size of the SQL Server error log, the sp_cycle_errorlog system stored procedure can be issued to start a new error log. Depending on the growth rate of the SQL Server error log dictates when sp_cycle_errorlog should be issued. Reference the code below as an example. EXEC master.sys.sp_cycle_errorlog; -- Expected successful output-- DBCC execution completed. If DBCC printed error messages, contact your system administrator. Next, the https://www.mssqltips.com/sqlservertip/1155/sql-server-2005-error-log-management/ easiest means to address this need would be to schedule a SQL Server Job to support the need. Reference the SQLServer2005_CycletheErrorLog_Job.txt as a point of reference. Finally, to address not loosing the historical SQL Server error log, the number of logs should be expanded beyond the default of 7. The maximum number of logs is 99 for the SQL Server error log. When it comes to expanding the number of SQL Server error logs, follow these steps: Open Management Studio Navigate to root | Management folder | SQL Server Logs folder Right click on the SQL Server Logs folder and select the 'Configure' option Select the 'Limit the number of error log files before they are recycled' check box Reference the screen shot below as a point of reference Enter the desired number of error logs in the 'Maximum number of error log files' Reference the screen shot below as a point of reference Press the 'OK' button to save the configuration Alternatively, the following code can be used to automate the process across multiple SQL Servers: USE [master]GOEXEC xp_instance_regwrite N'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE', N'Software\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\MSSQLServer', N'NumErrorLogs', REG_DWORD, 50GO SQL Server Agent Error Log The SQL Server Agent error log follows much of the same paradigm as the SQL Server error log. The recycling process is completed by the sp_cycle_agent_errorlog in the MSDB database. EXEC msdb.dbo.sp_cycle_ag
SERVER - Recycle Error Log - Create New Log file without Server Restart November 9, 2010Pinal DaveSQL, SQL Interview Questions and Answers, SQL Server, SQL Tips and Tricks20 commentsThe job of a consultant is always interesting – sometimes one becomes very busy and at times, over busy. I have been overwhelmed with recent http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2010/11/09/sql-server-recycle-error-log-create-new-log-file-without-server-restart/ performance tuning engagements. In one of the recent engagements, a large number of errors were found in the server. I noticed that their error log filled up very quickly. I also noticed a very interesting action by their DBA. I observed that after we make some changes in the server to avoid the errors, the DBA restarted the server. I asked him the reason for doing so. He explained every time that when he restarts the server, a sql server new error log file is created. The current log file is renamed as errorlog.1; errorlog.1 becomes errorlog.2, and in a similar way, it continues. This way, after making some change, we can watch the error file from the beginning. However, there is no need to restart the server to create a new log file or recycle the log file. You can run sp_cycle_errorlog and achieve the same result. Here is an example of what I am suggesting. Before sp_cycle_errorlog Executing sql server 2000 sp_cycle_errorlog EXEC sp_cycle_errorlog GO After sp_cycle_errorlogYou can also create a new log for the agent in the same way after running sp_cycle_agent_errorlog.Do you use this feature on your production server? I am interested to learn about this.Reference: Pinal Dave (http://blog.SQLAuthority.com) Tags: SQL Error Messages, SQL Scripts4Related Articles SQL SERVER - 2008 - Interview Questions and Answers - Part 4 September 15, 2008Pinal Dave SQL SERVER - The SQL Hands-On Guide for Beginners - Book Available for SQL Server Certification August 9, 2011Pinal Dave SQL SERVER - Delete Duplicate Records - Rows March 1, 2007Pinal Dave 20 comments.
