SERVER - ReIndexing Database Tables and Update Statistics on Tables January 31, 2007Pinal DaveSQL, http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2007/01/31/sql-server-reindexing-database-tables-and-update-statistics-on-tables/ SQL Performance, SQL Server, SQL Tips and https://bytes.com/topic/sql-server/answers/78923-order-error-running-dbcc-dbreindex Tricks106 commentsSQL SERVER 2005 uses ALTER INDEX syntax to reindex database. SQL SERVER 2005 supports DBREINDEX but it will be deprecated in future versions. When any data modification operations (INSERT, UPDATE, sql server or DELETE statements) table fragmentation can occur. DBCC DBREINDEX statement can be used to rebuild all the indexes on all the tables in database. DBCC DBREINDEX is efficient over dropping and recreating indexes.Execution of Stored Procedure sp_updatestats at the in sql server end of the Indexes process ensures updating stats of the database.Method 1: My PreferenceUSE MyDatabase
GO
EXEC sp_MSforeachtable @command1="print '?' DBCC DBREINDEX ('?', ' ', 80)"
GO
EXEC sp_updatestats
GO Method 2:USE MyDatabase
GO
CREATE PROCEDURE spUtil_ReIndexDatabase_UpdateStats
AS
DECLARE @MyTable VARCHAR(255)
DECLARE myCursor
CURSOR FOR
SELECT table_name
FROM information_schema.tables
WHERE table_type = 'base table'
OPEN myCursor
FETCH NEXT
FROM myCursor INTO @MyTable
WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS ... I'm running a simple DBCC DBREINDEX ('myTable') and I receive the following error: "Server: Msg 169, Level 15, State 2, Line 2 A column has been specified more than once in the order by list. Columns in the order by list must be unique. DBCC execution completed. If DBCC printed error messages, contact your system administrator." I can successfully reindex other tables in this database. I thought that perhaps I had objects in the database that ended up with the same name, but I've pretty much ruled that out. Any suggestions? Thanks John D. Morris mailto://jm********@hotmail.com Followup: As it turns out, I had a hidden "Hypothetical" index that the index tuning wizard decided not to clean up when it was done. The only way to see the index was in sp_helpindex. It did not appear in the object browser. MS claims this was fixed in SP1...I guess not. Anyway, dropped the hypothetical index and all is well. -jdm Jul 20 '05 #2 P: n/a Arun Marathe [MSFT] John, Can you consistently repro the bug? -- Arun Marathe Microsoft Corporation Disclaimers: (1) This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.
