Even locally on the server? ANd what does the Windows event log say? –gbn Jul 3 '13 at 6:50 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 4 down vote accepted There are several causes for this. The ones I know of (at least) max server memory set to 0 user connections set to 1 (limiting you to one only) and possibly server side SSL enabled Have you ever connected? Changed any settings? Have a backup of master? What other errors are there in the event log? Anyhow, restart SQL Server with the -f option and ensure the the 2 settings above are sensible. share|improve this answer answered Jul 3 '13 at 6:56 gbn 56.4k5102168 Your reply is almost correct. This error is http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic964905-146-1.aspx usually seen in conjunction with error 17824 when on sockets-based connections.
