We did a little research, followed all of the advice we https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/32271d63-637a-4de2-9ab9-ec0be5494dc5/microsoft-sql-server-error-10061-or-port-problems?forum=sqltools found online, and all of our settings seemed right. Out of desparation, we added the port that IP/All displayed in the server registration and...it worked. Now, I thought the the SQL Browser (or Agent, I forget) provided the port to which a process that was connecting needed to connect. No one changed any Sql Server or any other settings for that matter any time recently. Can someone shed some light on this for me? Join Now Okay, I did something https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/367937-need-help-can-no-longer-connect-to-sql-server-2012 bad. In cleaning up from the fallout of losing my FSMO-holding domain controller last week, I think I made things a lot worse. I'll try to sum up as best I http://www.c-sharpcorner.com/uploadfile/dhananjaycoder/microsoft-sql-server-error-10061/ can: 3 Servers, one running Win Server 2000 (LAND), one running Server 2003 (WATER2), and one Server 2008 R2. I transferred the FSMO roles to WATER2 and used dcpromo to make sql server it my new domain controller. LAND was a backup DC to the one that failed. So now WATER2 was my main. We are phasing out the 2k server so I stupidly decided to make the 2008 machine a domain controller. MACKENZIE also has SQL Server 2012 on it, and is our SharePoint server. I made MACKENZIE a DC then I went back and sql server error uninstalled AD from it when it turned out that having SQL on a DC was not advisable, but now I can no longer connect to the SQL Database that hosts the SharePoint 2010. I get this error: Failed to connect to server MACKENZIE\SHAREPOINT Additional information: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to the SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. The way I solved it is: Go to Start Type Run Type Services.msc Then locate for SQL Server instance you are trying to connect. In my case this is SQL TEST. Right click and select Properties In Properties Dialog box go to Log On tab Now if you have recently changed the login pass word of the system. Make sure for that particular account you have changed password here also. Better option would be make Log on as Local System account Navigate to General tab and change the Startup type to Automatic and Start the service Now try to connect SQL Server for that particular instance.
